I'm setting the over-under for the number of applicants at 44.5.
I'm taking the over.

I'll trade you two LeFreques for a Woodify and a gadget to be named later.

Re: Knoxville Symphony - Tuba Job
They take a sample of 50 attendees* and calculate the ratio of tattoos to teeth.
If that ratio is above 2.75 then they start with Rocky Top.
![Popcorn ](./images/smilies/i-j5bvb7N.gif)
*Might those 50 attendees account for half the audience?

Re: Knoxville Symphony - Tuba Job
Assuming around 150 services, that works out to about $24k.
Is there enough freelance or teaching in that area to make a living wage?
I'm setting the over/under for the number of applicants at 49.5.
Do you have the over or the under???

Re: not a poll... ie. the only way to respond is with words.
I do this and make my students do this: Play simple tunes by ear, without music, then transpose them to various keys. I find this exercise to be one of the top confidence-builders in a student and a top factor in developing overall musicality. Last week, a sixth-grader was thrilled when she discover...

Re: Tuba Tuesday: Mahillion, “French Tuba”, C tuba, 6 pistons, ca.1955
Yes, UncleBeer it was indeed interesting. I started taking lessons from him in HS. When he found out I was an avid amateur radio operator and knew my way around tube-based gear, he allowed me to work with some of the equipment in the studio. I paid for lessons by working at the warehouse and sometim...

Re: Tuba Tuesday: Mahillion, “French Tuba”, C tuba, 6 pistons, ca.1955
When I was working for Walter Sear in 1968 through 1970, a few of these passed through his then-warehouse and office at 784 6th Avenue in NYC. People actually bought them. In my capacity as part-time unboxer of shipments and remover of packing peanuts from instruments, I had the chance to play a cou...

Re: Flabby tuba sound in recordings
The flabbiness may well be a product of recording technology in general, and may be a specific product of previous difficulty in recording bass instruments well. Additionally, even with the best equipment, the person doing the recording may not be skilled at recording tuba. I've done some recording ...

Re: Solo recordings
Harvey's original Golden Crest is still my favorite tuba recording. Recorded in the late 50s/early 60s or so with 50s/60s equipment and splices can be counted on one hand with enough fingers left to throw a decent curve ball. Despite the (now) primitive recording technology, the musician comes throu...

Ted,
I overlapped with Dave in 1970 and maybe 1971. He was very nice to me as a freshman. Sorry to hear of his passing.

Re: WE are Cuba/Venezuela/sub-sararan Africa/etc.
I pulled up my rocking chair five and a half years ago, but I am nicer than most: You don't HAVE to get off my lawn, but I'd appreciate it dearly if you would. Someone I know was BOASTING on her LinkedIn page that she has accounting students do some coloring before class (to reduce students' stress)...
