Re: stage presence

@Bloke you may pull that particular digit, but no others, please. When I address the audience, it is to engage them and show appreciation for their attendance, and to give them some background info. I also believe that some brief respites between pieces are advisable. While I may give some ...

Re: stage presence

A few years ago, I was gonna give a recital at my kolij--Quintet (in which I play horn parts on euphonium), Tuba-Euph quartet, and euph/piano pieces. At the first rehearsal with the piano professor at the kolij, her first question was "You're not gonna do that thing where you talk to the audience ...

Re: Some swingin' playing by Harvey Phillips with Gil Evans

NOTHING Harvey did ever surprised me. I still remember some of the stuff he did in my lessons--and those lessons were 35-40 years ago. I'd be playing some tune and Harvey would stop me, saying something like "now when he got to the bridge, Bob Brookmeyer (or Curtis Fuller, or Hal McKusick) did this ...

I'm so old that there was no such subject as "History" in my school. We only had "current events."

As a member of the Board of Directors of HPF, and the typesetter for the more recent songbooks, I politely request that you order music direct from HPF. As another post pointed out, the proceeds are used for good purposes. Despite any advice to use xerox copies, it's copyrighted material-a ...

Is there a new edition. My book is 15-20 years old and the poor quality of the printing makes it very hard to read.
Mark,
There is indeed a newer edition. I did it some years ago. You probably have the version with the 9-pin dot-matrix print!

Re: Tubachristmas music

I don't always seek "personal musical satisfaction" when performing. Especially in this case, I seek: *To focus on and entertain an audience visually, orally (I'm the wise-cracking MC), and aurally. *To focus on and encourage young performers. *To focus on sharing a joyous season with fellow ...

Re: Great etudes rediscovered

If you're not playing with other people, does transposition really matter? I've been playing them as written on trombone and euphonium. They are really great as reading exercises. Very nice etudes. Not Rochut or Snedecor, but nice, playable, readable, and there are a lot of them. It depends upon ...

Re: Great etudes rediscovered

Reminder: These etudes are in TRANSPOSING bass clef. Not the biggest deal in the world, but worth noting nonetheless. You can find several clues in the explanation of overtones and in at least one of the etudes (2&4 for F#, for ex.). The designation Tuba Sib also indicates the use of transposing ...
