Re: Amazing Conn video
I had the chance to meet Fred Pfaff in the late 1970s/early 80s(?) when I visited Lee Richardson in Florida. When Lee and I pulled up to Fred's house, he greeted us from his roof, where he was fixing a few shingles. Of course, he was around 80 at the time. His son Lou was at the house during our vis...

Re: Holst - Suite 2 (beginning of March)
i've seen the statement "staccato doesn't mean short; it means separated" many times
How does one separate (place space between) notes without making at least the first one shorter?
And what, then, does staccato mean if it appears on a note surrounded by rests?

Re: Holst - Suite 2 (beginning of March)
Assuming you're not trolling the group, I say NO to both of the changes. *The long C is out of character for a march and inconsistent with what comes before it and after it. *You are playing it alone in a barn/workshop, not in a reverberant concert hall, in the back row, as a member of an ensemble--...

Re: Upper Register exercises for Tuba Eb
Hi, Crymzon... Try this to kill a couple of birds with one stone: Try playing some hymn tunes or other simple melodies in a comfortable key. Then try playing the same tune up a half-step or a whole step. Keep going up by half- or whole steps That way you can practice moving up your upper register an...

Re: brass choir concert - encore - Easy Button(s)
The Indy Brass Choir has played that arrangement several times with yours truly playing it on euph. I'll see if I can find a recording.
That arrangement is "interesting," as are several others by the same person.

Re: TubaChristmas 2020
As I mentioned above, in the midst of all the OT of trips to Alaska
,
nothing is firmly universally out at this time unless a local coordinator has
so decreed.
Please check the TubaChristmas website for updates about your event of choice.

Re: Yamaha 642 vs. 642II Neo
To me, they are two very distinct instruments. In fact, I'm not sure why Yamaha gave the Neo a 642 designation. I find the Neo (my current horn) to be more responsive and even through the registers with a nicer sound and less-sucky ergonomics. The old 642 always struck me as a "neutral" in...

All the Wonderphones seem to have uniquely-shaped bells. I've seen several and
wondered about their design. Not sure I have the vocabulary to describe what I
see. Any wisdom about the bells?

Re: First performance since March tonight
Had 10-15 German-style gigs cancelled and dozens of church services. Indianapolis Brass Choir on hold until 2021 at earliest because 90% of our jobs are in churches--hard to space performers and audiences. Indiana Wind Symphony starts up at the end of September--our home venue (the wonderful Carmel ...

Re: Are there any American tubists in German orchestras?
Tom Walsh played in the Munich Phil until his untimely passing around 2017 or so. He also played in a brass group called "Blechschaden" from the orchestra--the name is kind of a pun in german Blech=brass, Schaden=damage, and "Blechschaden" is like what we call "property dama...
