Re: old communist B&S C

It's called horse trading, Dale. For some, it is the easiest way to get nicer things.

Re: King 2-Valved GG Contra —> 5-Valved CC Tuba

This is my kludged-together valve set for this horn. It is very sloppily done but is more than good enough to do my intonation testing. I do not want to waste my time on either of these old bugles if they are going to be bowsers. I had decided that if this turns out to be really great that I would ...

Re: main slide position and temperature changes

This is what happens when you guys use air-cooled tubas instead of liquid-cooled ones. In the South, you need your pistons to be liquid-cooled.

Re: WTT - Firstborn Child for Original Willson/Kurath Ginormous Thumb Ring

I remember why I can't make these. To keep the tube round (and not flattened on the inside face of the annulus) I need a special mandrel that I cannot afford to have made for me. Maybe the Harbor Freight tube bender has a half-round mandrel of the correct size? Nah, it is mostly for exhaust systems ...

Re: WTB: Willson or Kurath Original Huge Thumb Ring

No, I want the real thing. Thanks, though. I have a box with some 35 thumb rings and I have the ability to hack off a mouthpiece rim. But that is not what I want. That is why I am here advertising for one and not chopping up an old Bach.

Re: main slide position and temperature changes

Yes. Bigger tubas take more correction. If I have to play my 186 and my Holton at the same outdoor concert (which has actually happened a few times, unfortunately) I will have to pull out on the 186 about a half of an inch but more than twice that to correct the Holton. Conversely, my thin, light ...

Re: Yamaclone buzzing issue

Hey Arpy, I encountered this phenominum and a friend suggested using a short piece of garden hose to go over the horn methodically while it's being played. Just to be clear, you, or your assistant have one end of the hose up to your ear and the other person plays while you go over the entire horn ...

Re: Didn't Get the Coronation Gig?

Linda Ronstadt was my version of your ONJ story. She sang operetta very well, did the Nelson Riddle stuff, made a mariachi album that was excellent and sang pop/rock quite well. And she was cute! I played behind her here sometime around 1994 or 1995. She came to our local music festival and I got to ...

I still need to braze the two 2-piston units together to make a four-banger set. Of course, the ports will be in the wrong locations…

This would not be for either of the K-90s but for some other, future project.

Re: WTB: Willson or Kurath Original Huge Thumb Ring

Thanks, sir! I think I may make one if I can locate the same OD/thickness n.s. tubing. I have made these before. (I posted the steps above.) It is not difficult, but it is a hassle that I had hoped to avoid. Plus, I have never had to bend one using such thick and large tubing. The only way to do it ...

Re: Didn't Get the Coronation Gig?

tl;dr "stuff" Yeah, I have played *with* (and not *for*) many so-called stars since I started gigging in 1983. (Wow, that is 40 years this year. Wow…) I tend to avoid them. I hate it when I am buttonholed in the parking lot or backstage by well-meaning folks, but I always stand around and chat if t ...

… Marilyn Quayle was the host / keynote… When I played for the King of Spain it was at the 1992 World's Fair in Seville. The US State Department invited us to perform at the US pavilion on "United States Day" at the fair, and they paid for us to get there and back. Mrs. Quayle was the Keynote spe ...

Re: King 2-Valved GG Contra —> 5-Valved CC Tuba

Today I sorted through my several small boxes of rotary valves. I put together a set of five that will allow me to build this into a working test mule. If it turns out to have usable intonation and decent response then when someone asks me, "What can you do with one of those old drum corps bugles ...

I need the full ring only. It has to be removable or "action figure posable"…

I did not know they made the jumbos like Cerveny rings. Thanks, though. I will update the original post.

Re: King 2-Valved GG Contra —> 5-Valved CC Tuba

Here is a photo refresher on all the things I have done in the past to these old bugles, but posted in separate threads. ______________ I have plans to make a 4p/1r GG tuba out of the other K-90. Here is a collage that compares the K-90 bugle to an old-style 2341 and that shows how I had planned (at ...

Re: King 2-Valved GG Contra —> 5-Valved CC Tuba

Okay, so this was posted on my second day here in this new space provided for our rather old community. It may have been my first post here. I can't remember. I am currently in experimental mode. I have to do a lot of work on all three of my horns (mostly clean-up work, but some pending big stuff on ...
