Re: Varnish: (golden) for metal instruments.

No varnish. Lacquer. There are a number of types in use, but I only have experience with nitrocellulose and baked epoxy. Nitrocellulose is easier to use but is fragile. Baked epozy is more difficult to apply correctly, but seems to be more durable. The application of the lacquer to metal (via a ...

Re: Finale is Dead - You Must Switch to Dorico

Finale checks the SN of the computer it is installed on against the list maintained on the MM servers. The good thing about Parallels is that the VM generates a virtual SN, and when you use it - on any computer - it retains that virtual SN, so Finale stays authorized even when used within the VM ...

Re: Finale is Dead - You Must Switch to Dorico

Did you see the evening update Wade? Had not seen it. Checked my email just now due to your question, and THAT SOLVES THE WORST PART. Now I have to purchase a new computer, permanently isolate it from the Internet, and freeze the OS and Finale pretty much forever. But at least after spending a ...

Re: Finale is Dead - You Must Switch to Dorico

Joe, stop helping. You do not know how the programs work and do not seem to trust us to know how bad the situation is, as though you think we are children in need of sage advice or something. Thank you, but no. The issue for me is that I CAN NO LONGER MAKE MONEY AS AN ENGRAVER. Please allow me in ...

Re: Finale is Dead - You Must Switch to Dorico

From Brian Doughty of Cimmaron Press… If you have Finale, some suggestions: 1. Turn off ALL automatic OS updates on your computer. Do not run the risk of having your computer update and eliminating the use of Finale. 2. Do not update whatever version of Finale you are currently using. Do not get a n ...

Re: Finale is Dead - You Must Switch to Dorico

My research tells me that Finale's validation algorithm does not "call home" at startup, but only once when it is installed. When the tool attempts to validate an installation it reports the computer's SN to those nice kids at MM. You are only allowed three installs per license. (It used to be five ...

Re: Finale is Dead - You Must Switch to Dorico

WTF? Finale is 100% on the computer. Publishing houses have used it for decades on printing presses (real ones) that are not Internet-capable devices. Have you ever used it? None of it is online at all. User authorization numbers will expire in one year and then if your install gets corrupted you ...

Re: Finale is Dead - You Must Switch to Dorico

Joe, our files will no longer work after about a year. You won't be able to open them, according to a phone call I made earlier today. And you would have to have a special, frozen-in-time computer to maintain the OS that can understand Finale and open it. Every Finale user will have to pony up ...

Re: Finale is Dead - You Must Switch to Dorico

My Army band previewed and beta-tested Finale 0.9 in 1987. I was the Assistant Music Librarian so I was the victim. I had been using this terrible program made for use with dot matrix printers called Encore, and Finale - in the nascent version I was testing - was head and shoulders above Encore or ...

Finale is Dead - You Must Switch to Dorico

After 35 years they are closing up shop. And here I was, stupidly hoping that they would stop with all the STUPID feature additions and for once… JUST ONCE… focus on fixing some decades-old bugs that have pissed off the professional user base forever. Nope. I have used Finale since version 2.5 I sti ...

Yes, Ted Cox , this is *that* Alex. I posted the two-page letter (above) from Anton Alexander, who stated that it was likely manufactured in 1959 despite having been sold in 1960. In the seller’s original post I shared the story of the OKC bombing that morning. I may need to tell that one again, ...

Re: What's your favorite "slow" piece?

Barber's "Adagio" from his string quartet — PLAYED BY FOUR PLAYERS rather than a herd of them. Listening to this piece can be a sublime experience when played by just four, as he intended it originally. A top-shelf quartet playing this can make you tear up. It can break your heart. It is naked, raw, ...

We got your joke. We liked your joke. In fact, one might say that "Yuh done right good, bwah." He will need to be fed once a day. He prefers Brute Supplement #25. And he will require water. And you must provide him with a sandbox. And you must talk to him. Tell him he is a pretty brute… and a good b ...

Re: 1964 Holton 345 CC "FrankenBAT" - EXCELLENT!

TubaBaja I Facebook-stalked you and saw you're a Navy vet, so I would definitely be willing to sell it to you. (I was in an Army band many moons ago.) So good luck selling your cimbasso and getting the funds. To help, I would be willing to meet you in Marshall, Longview, or Kilgore if you could ...
