I did not read anything other than your post, MA, but I am betting at least a few will recommend a small shank Bach 6 1/2 AL.
I would, too.

An Elephantine Spouting of Broughton
My performance of the Broughton Concerto with the Metropolitan Chamber Orchestra of Jackson will be on Sunday, 27 April 2025. I plan to play by memory, but of course, this could change if it proves to be impracticable or I chicken out, heh, heh… More info will be provided in April. Admission is u ...

No message? Why would someone bother posting that for a deletion? I have only ever seen "NM" used for "Never Mind".

EDUCATE ME! (ECB632)
Okay, so I thought my classic 1971 Mirafone 186-5U was my "forever" tuba. It may be; it may not. My playing life is in flux now due to my recent purchases of the YamaYork and the Adams F. I find that my needs are being met in different ways than in the past, and that they are being met more ...

Re: Best way to clean tarnished silver mouthpieces?
The way we did it at the shop where I apprenticed is not a way you can do at home unless you have all the gear. However, I will throw this up here for people searching Google for ideas as some may find parts of it helpful. Plating on mouthpieces is very heavy, in general, as compared with body tubes ...

Re: Bell replacement for Olds o99 tuba
To Jose (and for future reference for anyone reading this in the future, seeking the same information…) The Olds BU-20 piston/rotor contrabass bugle uses the same bell. The bugle has hardware to make the bell fully removable, which is nice if you want that, but it will fit into the O-99 bell ferrule, ...

Re: working tuba players: fixing sears-and-roebuck bass lines in pops quintet arrangements
We have about a dozen tunes in our quintet folder that, once we had read them initially (decades ago) I have only ever played them by ear, as I do in a traditional jazz band setting. I know the tunes, I "know' the arrangements, and I try to make a bass line that fits the tune and what is going on in ...

REVIEW: CHI Brass AJ Adjustable Cup Mouthpiece
Is it worth the hefty $500 (with silver plating — $679 with gold plating!!!) price tag? Is it a gimmick? Is it magic? <snicker> So I dropped the $$$ needed to get one of these mouthpieces, fully recognizing that I probably would never use it at work. I also fully recognized that this weird piece of g ...

Re: For Sale - Schilpf #11 practice mute
Perhaps the regular mute numbers do not match with the practice mute numbers, but according to the Schilpf document provided in the link above this is not possible. Please read the description from that Schilpf document. It lists nothing but very large tubas in the description for the #11 practice ...

Re: Q for Alex owners: super large shank mouthpieces
Outside of Doug Elliott, is there a modern mouthpiece brand that's offered in super large shank? What do you use in your 163/164? Fortunately, my experience is that those Alexes love the Doug Elliott R cup. Ron Bishop and Matt Good used them and, I believe, our own Mr. Elephant used one when he had ...

Re: For Sale - Schilpf #11 practice mute
The Schilpf guide says the 11 fits 6/4 horns like the Holton 345 or the MW 2165. The Daryl Smith is very much a 4/4 tuba. I am not understanding you, here. Are you sure it is an 11 or are you calling the Kalison Pro 2000 a DS? (The Pro 2000 is the Kalison horn that the #11 fits,) If this will ...

Re: Any Direct Comparisons of HB10 and Adams F?
I know who "Mickey" Moore is. but the name "Michael Moore" did not ring a bel at first. I believe he used to occasionally sub into my orchestra many years ago when he was at USM. (The MSO player back then was a local band director named David Mayfield and the orchestra barely paid babysitting money ...

Re: Any Direct Comparisons of HB10 and Adams F?
Since I have never heard of this man I would not be comfortable contacting him. I would rather not cold-call someone to "invite myself over for tea", so to speak.
And what makes you believe he owns an HB-10? It says nothing about that in his bio.

Re: Health issues and going forward
Hang tough. Don. It is an adjustment, but that is all. You can still (mostly) do what you want if you practice moderation and know when to call it quits on bad days. I want to take the time off but have bills to pay, so I missed a few gigs and am now under a lot of pressure to *not* miss any more of ...
