How about the most intentional dissonance?

The Streets of San Francisco

I love that one!

Re: Which are the worst out-of-tune vintage TV shows' theme music?

MASH, between something like seasons 5 through 8 has that damned, flat piccolo that wants to blow my TV's speaker every time it fires that note like a laser beam. If they rereleased the entire series with that particular "performance" replaced by the one used in the first few years I would...

Re: Kniffen Conn 6/4 BBb!!!

Do you know what was done to it after Martin Wilk "created" the thing? And who did them? Or are you referring to the bell swap and the removable valve section as the modifications?

Re: YCB-621 appearing on an auction site

:red: I sold my bare brass, hot-rodded one for $6000 about eight years ago. I wasn't aware that you/Wade owned a 621 C. ...but I don't know a whole bunch of stuff. I'm thinking I bought a new-condition (used) silver one (C) for $2000 - quite a few years ago, played it on one gig a week later, found ...

Re: King 2-Valved GG Contra —> 5-Valved CC Tuba

Measure twice — cut once. No. Measure 50 times — measure again — hold off on cutting anything — AGAIN. After hours of farting around with a tailor's tape measure, a calculator, calipers, a marker, and blue tape, I have figured out exactly where and how much each cut must be… … and now I don't want t...

What were the modifications?

And the price was what bort listed, so the mods do not affect him selling it for that price, before or after they were made.

Re: King 2-Valved GG Contra —> 5-Valved CC Tuba

I have received a few questions about why I changed my selection of valves (bore sizes). The in-b3etween valve is the 20 mm Kurath 5th rotor. Crooks for 2nd slides are not easy to come by for stray rotary valves. I am not sure I can source one easily for this size that has the EXACT same span. I mig...

Re: King 2-Valved GG Contra —> 5-Valved CC Tuba

Okay! I soldered the end ferrules to the valves, and then the valves to the horn. To make it easier to mess around with leadpipes I made sure it had a leak-free friction fit to the ferrule and then taped it into place. I used the N/OS 1978 186 leadipipe (smaller) with the traditional receiver (tradi...

Re: vintage 186 420mm diameter bells' resonance characteristics

Y'all don't remember your history. ALL bells are two pieces. The term "one-piece bell" refers to how many pieces the flare has. A "two-piece bell" has an insert, which is called a gusset. A gusseted bell flare is considered to be a "two-piece bell" by manufacturers. Whe...

It's called horse trading, Dale. For some, it is the easiest way to get nicer things.

Re: King 2-Valved GG Contra —> 5-Valved CC Tuba

This is my kludged-together valve set for this horn. It is very sloppily done but is more than good enough to do my intonation testing. I do not want to waste my time on either of these old bugles if they are going to be bowsers. I had decided that if this turns out to be really great that I would b...

Re: main slide position and temperature changes

This is what happens when you guys use air-cooled tubas instead of liquid-cooled ones. In the South, you need your pistons to be liquid-cooled.

Re: WTT - Firstborn Child for Original Willson/Kurath Ginormous Thumb Ring

I remember why I can't make these. To keep the tube round (and not flattened on the inside face of the annulus) I need a special mandrel that I cannot afford to have made for me. Maybe the Harbor Freight tube bender has a half-round mandrel of the correct size? Nah, it is mostly for exhaust systems ...

Re: WTB: Willson or Kurath Original Huge Thumb Ring

No, I want the real thing. Thanks, though. I have a box with some 35 thumb rings and I have the ability to hack off a mouthpiece rim. But that is not what I want. That is why I am here advertising for one and not chopping up an old Bach.

Re: main slide position and temperature changes

Yes. Bigger tubas take more correction. If I have to play my 186 and my Holton at the same outdoor concert (which has actually happened a few times, unfortunately) I will have to pull out on the 186 about a half of an inch but more than twice that to correct the Holton. Conversely, my thin, light, c...

Re: Yamaclone buzzing issue

Hey Arpy, I encountered this phenominum and a friend suggested using a short piece of garden hose to go over the horn methodically while it's being played. Just to be clear, you, or your assistant have one end of the hose up to your ear and the other person plays while you go over the entire horn. ...

Re: Didn't Get the Coronation Gig?

Linda Ronstadt was my version of your ONJ story. She sang operetta very well, did the Nelson Riddle stuff, made a mariachi album that was excellent and sang pop/rock quite well. And she was cute! I played behind her here sometime around 1994 or 1995. She came to our local music festival and I got to...
