Re: bad music

The local university has a music department that continually wants to prove how smart it is, which means they continually play what I generally classify as "technically difficult noise" and pat themselves on the back. I don't know when this trend started, but it's been a while. Back in the 1970s ...

Re: Anything new with Tubas?

It's not exactly "new" but Robin Hayward with B&S and a few research institutions developed a way to play tuba microtonally. (His website) https://robinhayward.com/eng/mitontuba.php From what I can see, it seems to allow you to play between the notes fairly indiscriminately. A selling point listed ...

Re: embouchure?

That is such bad teaching....it doesn't work, never worked, and the people who taught that had no idea how to actually play the trumpet, although they could probably do ok on lower parts. I wish I had references to Roger Lewis's posts on the old forum....it is LIP POSITION. Curl out for low (kissy ...

Re: embouchure?

I think you'll find this video helpful: https://youtu.be/j1RdsSWDMcs It's not good to stretch your embouchre to hit high notes because you'll have less control of them as a result and less lip flexibility at the end of the road. I would honestly suggest doing exercises where you free-buzz higher ...

Re: Helleberg-like smaller mouthpieces

I recall a person (whose decision-making/advice-giving I really didn’t respect, but whose saying makes sense) stating that “you go to war with the army that you have...” If you’re about the age I suspect you are, I used to tackle a lot of the solo lit’ (which is much more accessible on bass tubas) o ...

Re: Helleberg-like smaller mouthpieces

I think I'll just go with the 7B until I can drop a little more money, then I'll probably get the Sellmansberger. Maybe after I get a bass tuba sometime in the distant future... :eyes:

Helleberg-like smaller mouthpieces

Hi, I'm currently practicing the Gregson on a Helleberg 120-S and a CC Miraphone 186 clone and I was wondering if there was a comparable, smaller mouthpiece that might help to space the upper partials out a bit, (can a mouthpiece do that?) or at least in some way, shape, or form help make the E ...
