I never did understand the Wind Symphony thing. Wind Ensemble, as Fennell did, was one person per part. I guess a Symphonic Band may include a bass fiddle and a harp? To me, they are either marching bands or sit down bands.

What makes the sound?

How does a tuba (or other brass instrument) make a sound? Is it because it is simply amplifying the buzz of the lips? (this is what I always believed and taught) OR Is it the because the air traveling through the horn actually makes the sound and causes sympathetic vibrations in the lips? Physicists ...

Bach mouthpieces

When did Bach start making tuba mouthpieces? The oldest I have seen is from the early 60s - VINCENT BACK CORP MT VERNON NY - with no periods. 50s Mt Vernon trumpet mouthpieces had periods after CORP and MT. Anyone see a pre 60s example?

Re: tripod-base "display only" tuba stands

I have three old Eb horns sitting on cheap guitar stands. It has worked so far, but if they do fall over, it's no big deal - they are little more than decorations.

Re: Protec sousaphone gig bag *shrug*?

I'm pretty particular about protecting my instruments - except sousaphones. I don't use one much at all, but they stay in my workshop unprotected, and if I do use one, it goes in the bed of my truck. Shrug>

Re: FS: 1959 Alexander 163 CC 4 rotary valve tuba

I went through the dating thing with my first Alex. I was bought by my friend "very used" in 1969, he was told it was from 1917, Alexander said it was from the 1970s. Who knows unless you find the original owner - which Wade may have. I was just curious.

I'm curious how you dated it to 1959, since they didn't have serial numbers.
