Re: mute change requests which are too quick

There seems to be a strong correlation between written music requiring fast mute changes and also having been recently written as well as additionally not seeming to be that which is likely to withstand the test of time.

Counterpoint: Pictures. After those muted Abs at the end of Gnomus, you ...

There's an edition of Freischutz that has tuba in it?

Re: Thin rims that I use and offer, and why

I loved the tone I got on my 181 with it, and the wide throat is like Easy Mode for getting more sound out of the horn.

The rim is a disqualifier for me, though. I don't like the feel of a rim that round. If it were possible, I'd get the shank and cup and screw another rim on it.

Re: Thin rims that I use and offer, and why

At first, some who try this rim profile tell me that (regardless of donut size) they feel uncomfortable, because the mouthpiece feels to "big".
I suspect that what they are feeling is the LACK of all of that contact, and what they are feeling (rather than "big") is "next to nothing" (ie. far less ...

Re: Sellmansberger Symphony vs. OG Cup

I was considering, if I can get mine unseized, trying the OG cup with a symphony shank.

This was the combination I used with my previous horn (BMB J-865) and it worked really well for that horn. When I bought my current DS, I bought the inverse components to try the different combinations to ...

At least they're looking out for us

My orchestra is playing Symphonic Dances this cycle. We read through it last night and I saw this penciled into the bass trombone part:

I guess the last group that played this had a tuba player that liked to nap during rehearsal. (Not that I'd blame them in this ...

Re: Kalison Tuba Mouthpiece recommendations

Shank size can also be key… Found that out with my 2165. Stick a Euro, PT and American shank in there and see what happens.

It takes American shank. I use the Sellmansberger Symphony cup and shank on mine. Orchestral Grand (as cktuba mentioned) also works well, but I liked the tone I got ...

Re: Jakob Winter case: push or pull?

Both my DS and 181 have Winter cases. I feel like I need to be drunk for them to go in a straight line when pushing.

Re: today, Dec. 10th - 58th anniversary Otis Redding & Barkays

A sad day in music and Madison history.

We have an Elvis story, too. A couple months before he died in '77, he broke up a street fight in what's now a used car lot (I think it was a gas station at the time).

Both stories have commemorative plaques. Elvis's is at the location where it happened ...

The urban legends surrounding Dvořák and Sibelius get repeated often. Gotta wonder what a tuba player did to Tchaikovsky around the time he was composing Romeo and Juliet.

Re: update on playing with "band director" band...

I played both Gandalf and the Paul Lavender "Excerpts from" arrangement when it was being overplayed (maybe a couple times on Gandalf even).

About a decade ago, I did get the opportunity to play the entire symphony. My employer also used a recording as filler music at an event once (without ...
