Re: Old Man Tubas... a list or repository?
I heard Mark Nelson play one of those in a recital a few years ago....the valve noise was almost louder than the instrument.

Re: Old Man Tubas... a list or repository?
Honestly I have my eyes on a Bombino but I have to see if I can play my euph first.....it would be bigger than the euph so if I can't handle the euph even the Bombino would be out. If I could find one of those old three-banger top valves that was in tune with itself, that would be the best solution,...

Re: Old Man Tubas... a list or repository?
I'd like to find a 10# Eb that plays in tune. I can blow it, just can't lift it. Enjoy your health while you have it because you never know when it is going to suddenly wave bye-bye. I always figured tuba would be my retirement instrument because it is so much easier to play than horn, but when my f...

Re: American F tuba/Fake f tuba
I had one of those, with the 2+3 5th valve, vented valves. It was really a nice tuba. Perfect for quintet. Unless you are Roger Bobo. Then it's perfect for a major US orchestra. :tuba: I actually was told, and have NO idea if it was true, that my tuba was once owned and played by Torchinsky (if I s...

A horn player can bend those notes and make them work.

That poor kid. I don't know what became of him....but I always considered that maybe he did have a wonderful sound, and was just too naive to know to keep his mouth shut in this venue.Three Valves wrote: ↑Mon Apr 12, 2021 12:38 pm Besides, when one has World Class Sound, who needs pitch and time??

Re: What’s being played: you, or your instrument?
I remember trying to explain to a (not too bright) friend that paying someone to show him how to win in the stock market made no sense, because if that guy was making money in the stock market he would have no desire or need to teach others because he'd be stinking rich and out on the golf course in...

Re: What’s being played: you, or your instrument?
When was at IU, teachers were in charge of which students got into the top and not-top orchestras. Teachers with more students had to put some in the lower orchestra because they had used up their allotment in the higher orchestra. Students passed upper division exams based on who their teacher was....

When you have kids getting rewarded (usually by being put into some exclusive honors club or whatever) by being a slave to the department while other people (e.g. me) are getting good grades, playing the spots off the page, and making money from lessons and gigs, it becomes crystal clear where the ...

Re: tuning
One of my favorite guitar performers anywhere any time is Leo Kotke, whom I have heard in person several times. I never, ever, had any issue with the tuning of his guitars. Because he could hear. Someone who can't hear and likes it, ok, be that way, but don't expect to lend me your guitar and have m...
