Re: My 1895 Conn Eb -- how far should I go?
I personally love the mailbox idea and if it were mine, would do that.

Re: immersing a tuba in soapy water
So, about cleaning. If I do end up with an ancient 3-banger Eb, it is likely to have that "old tuba smell" that I have been unable to get out of a brass instrument in the past. (that instrument, a Sansone high F single horn, was ultrasound cleaned twice, chem-cleaned once, and some idiot even used ...

Re: Rant on musicality
That fabulous oboe piece (thank you, bloke-- ) reminded me somehow of a park concert I attended a few years ago. Big concert band, the one I play horn in now, but I wasn't for some reason playing in it at that time. There was an oboe duet solo piece, the first oboe in the band and the then first ...

I haven't played many, but the best was a Firebird and the worst was an SLP.

Re: nearly-free very small E-flat tuba
I agree it does look like a small tuba. But what I said about there being no one nearby to fix it up is correct. And it's in MI with the assumption that it will be a local pickup. So -- my tuba will show up when it is supposed to, if it is supposed to.

Dat's a baritone.
And there is no one within driving distance of here who can fix such a thing in any competent way, anyway.

Re: re: "orchestral" tuba players
"not allowing tempos to sag" --- I actually quit a brass band because the conductor was "counting on me to keep the band on the beat" when she would NOT get rid of a snare player who was consistently behind the beat, no matter how much the band slowed down trying to stay with the snare. Someone who ...

Re: re: "orchestral" tuba players
I totally disagree with the "if you can sing it you can buzz it." Not if you don't have the technique to buzz it. Sheesh. When I was younger I could sing notes (that I can't sing now because my voice has lowered with age by about a fourth) WAY higher than I ever could buzz. I've had two different ...

Re: Miraphone Standard Eb
Well, the plan is to have the seller play it for me (FB messenger or Zoom) while I can see a tuner, to prove that the open bugle can be lipped into tune, he actually is a tuba player who owns it (I don't think there is a question of that actually) and that the intonation is not "stretched" as I've ...

Miraphone Standard Eb
Never heard of an Eb Miraphone Standard. Anybody? Three-banger upright valves but I know nothing about them. One available that I'm interested in.

Re: Tuner recommendations
I do have a question about why to have a tuner, as opposed to a drone source. Rather than have something tell me how far I am from the center of a tempered tuning pitch, I'd rather have a drone I can listen to and determine whether I can fit my pitch properly to it interval-wise so that my ears do ...

Re: it was meant as a compliment, i'm sure but....
One really interesting thing about getting older and being single, is that the men I run into have heard enough times in the past what they mess up on, that they tend to have fixed a lot of it. First time around, they don't want to fix it. Third or fourth time around, they realize they get better ...

Re: tuning lead pipe
I believe that the F tuba “C“ thing results from a couple of things: - players approaching that pitch as if it’s an open C on a C tuba (totally different resistance), whereas the approach should be more like that of playing a C tuba’s low G - though the embouchure set is obviously not as open. I act ...

Re: tuning lead pipe
Well I in my ignorance think it has something to do with nodes. My MW 182 F, I could play the low C but it distinctly felt funny. I presume if I had played it longer I would have gotten better at it, but I really didn't like the funny feeling of it.

Re: tuning lead pipe
Walter Lawson, a custom horn maker, really had that all down. I don't know whether to say down to an art or down to a science, but a Lawson bell or Lawson leadpipe could dramatically change your instrument for the better. I put a Lawson bell on my "slippery" horn (slots were not secure) and suddenly ...

Re: nature vs. nurture
I agree about the insult although it's not on purpose; they realize no amount of work would have gotten THEM there, and so they assume it is "talent." I used to mess with people when I was playing fiddle in bars; they would come up all gaga and say "How long have you been playing?" And I'd say, "Six ...

Re: nature vs. nurture
My understanding is that what's-his-name was fired from the NYP because of harassing someone. That was the word in the horn world. Perhaps "requested to retire" but nonetheless...... I once said that I'd be happy to do his laundry if I would get to listen to him practice. Perhaps best that did not ...
