Re: volume of sound in relation to size of tuba

I thought we were discussing fundamental pitches, not harmonics, based on what the OP said.

Re: Protec sousaphone gig bag *shrug*?

I can't LIFT a hard case with a tuba in it.

Re: volume of sound in relation to size of tuba

I have yet to encounter a tuba player who regularly produces pitches in the 1000Hz range. Trumpets, yes.

Re: What?

Just this past week I was switching tubas during quartet and one of the euphs commented that he didn't see how I managed that since they weigh 40 pounds. Rather than let him go on thinking I am Superwoman I enlightened him.

The tap water in Phoenix is so hard that it almost qualifies as an electrolyte. Tucson too -- courtesy of the open trough called the Central Arizona Project.

Re: plastic version of Alex dbl. hn.

A P-bone is a toy and I don't think it was ever thought of as anything else. A carbon fiber "real instrument" isn't something you would have thought of as a toy, and you wouldn't give it to your five year old to play with either. I got my red P-bone to use when we piled in a car and went around at ...

Re: plastic version of Alex dbl. hn.

I have a P-bone and it is not a trombone in terms of sound or playability. A fun toy or something you leave on the picnic table at the campground.

Re: "winning" a job

A guy who was in my high school class ended up being a professor of trumpet at IU. 25 years ago we had a reunion of the social crowd from high school, and I mentioned to him that he must have gotten his doctorate along the way, but he said, "I just barely got my bachelor's." Someone of his skill ...

Interesting that she can even get that out of a plastic instrument.

Re: "winning" a job

I had lunch recently with a trumpeter who was with the symphony here, quit for a year, and is considering auditioning again (gee the person who got her job ALSO quit, and probably for the same reason) because -- it's money, and she needs the money. Another person in the same general age bracket who ...

I always find myself wondering what the original patent owner would think if he could see what we're using now.

Re: Wick mouthpieces

So now I've gotten into one of my silly engineer-brain thought trains about mouth width vs optimal cup width. Kind of obvious that those with wider mouths will be able to play wider cups without getting lost in them, and might feel restricted with a narrow cup (although we horn players manage quite ...

Re: Wick mouthpieces

Plating, as I understand it, is not difficult on something like a mouthpiece. I used to know Tom Greer (RIP) who made Moosewood horn mouthpieces. Once when I was at his house, he was silver plating one and had it suspended in a glass of water, maybe with a silver rod and hooked to a D battery or ...

Re: Not a 861, but rather…

I did rather well a couple times -- got my oboe and my Sterling euph at good prices and both excellent instruments. The oboe was almost a steal, because it wasn't a Loree but a Rigoutat. Both those purchases were pre- covid by years, and things everywhere have, um, changed. I've even recently found ...

That is a trick I have used too when I started reacting to silver.

Re: cimbasso trombone

Hmmm. I have an old Yamaha 622 (? - single rotor) bass bone, and played with a 9C it has a very nice mellow tone, better than I can get out of a regular tenor bone. Of course the blatty x-low range isn't really accessible with that mouthpiece, but I was surprised at what comes out of it played with ...

Yup -- if you bite on his, he buys the other one and immediately resells to you with the few hundred profit. It's in his feedback that he does that on a regular basis. Flipper.

Re: encouraging rattle can satin black paint to stick to chrome plating

local thrift store had a black wire stand with adjustable angle desk for $5. I didn't get it because I have about six stands already. I woulda got it if Ida known you needed one. I'll drop by today and look but their stuff turns over quickly because of their good prices.

The 5, I bought used and it is gold plated, definitely worn to not shiny any more. The 4 is silver and likely will last as long as I do.
