Wick mouthpieces
I ended up, so far, using a Wick 5 on the NStar; narrow enough for my face but not incredibly shallow, works quite well for bass tuba in brass band and quartet, both of which have a lot going on in the top half of the staff and above. Browsing the specs, I noted that the cups increase in both width ...

Re: cimbasso trombone
What about an English baritone or a German Kaiser baritone. Similar to a Wagner Tuba, but uses a trombone-sized mouthpiece and could rest on a chair. I had a MW rotary baritone for a while -- ergonomically it was usable but the intonation was so wonky even in the open bugle that I got rid of it ...

Re: cimbasso trombone
I can't play the euph because of two things: I am not a piston person, my first brass at 45 having been the horn, and my very small hands now are so numb I can't "find" pistons anyway to mash them. The weight of the euph, which does not sit on the chair or my lap, is too much to hold up. I hate ...

Re: hollow rotors
I remember that silly plastic insert -- at the time I had a MW 182 F and the low C was inaccessible to me. The seller of those things assured me it would fix the problem, so I spent the $3 or whatever it was. I realized pretty quickly it fit the description of "placebo" and sent it back for a refund ...

Re: cimbasso trombone
Just to clarify -- I asked about cimbassi because I cannot hold up a trombone. It would have to rest on the floor, have rotary valves, and be playable on medium level brass quintet tbone parts. If I were wanting to toss a lot of money around for something to play once a month or so, the Mike Johnson ...

Re: hollow rotors
It is the waves moving back and forth that need a lack of rough edges, and also the waves that need resonance. I don't think the comparison of air flows is apropos to what I was talking about.

cimbasso trombone
Is there a rotary valve instrument in the cimbasso class that is the same range (Bb) as a trombone?

Re: Tuba-Shipping Tips?
With a recent purchase, after a week's use some very old, very hard, very small peanuts came out from somewhere within -- and they weren't recent ones from the very well packed tuba when I got it. Tuba is now at the one good guy in town to vent the valves ($20 each) and find out if there are more ...

Re: Turning over all my equipment
Tuesday when the quartet was here, I mentioned that Alex CC and how one can never have too many tubas, and the euph players found that hilariously funny. But the Tuba II player, who also plays an NStar everywhere, has six tubas. I only have FOUR and maybe I need to fix that. Still after the ...

Re: hollow rotors
Just my passing meaningless comments about acoustical claims etc.: Seems that somewhere in there, turbulence, (lack of) has to come into it. Would there exist a mathematical curve somewhere showing a range of turbulence related to either sound or playability or both? Certainly seems like lack of ...

What I have wondered at times is whether Miraphone Music is a very good synthetization or perfect playing.

Re: The most mediocre tuba section
I'm happy that I can still listen to some music right-brained instead of analyzing how it is being played. The written word, however, nope. Facebook is torture for me except for one group that is for writers.

Based on size, Grand Wardrobe box. Box-in-a-box if you can manage it.

I think those of us who "can't not proofread" give ourselves more stress than we need.

On consignment the seller is going to get way less than the asking price. Better off to lower the price unless the hassle isn't worth it.

Re: Junk/cheap French horn
Beginners should be on a single Bb. Single F horns are difficult to play and will turn off many who could be fine horn players if they weren't started on single F horns. The older junk ones are very, very bad.

Re: Finale is Dead - You Must Switch to Dorico
Huh. For new files, I find myself intrigued by Lilypond, which I had heard of but didn't know what it was. (I went and looked at the beginnings of the tutorials.) When I either transcribe from something I hear or write down new melodies from my head, I actually use a notation similar to this that I ...

Re: Finale is Dead - You Must Switch to Dorico
So ideally here's my optimal path: my old dead Mac Pro had finale 2005b on it and I have the install disks, although they are not mine originally but were lent to me by someone no longer with us. Assuming I could install with my own license, what I would want to do with a VM is whatever Mac OS works ...
