Re: Besson 15" bell satin silver Eb
Pretty! And must be a good one if it doesn't start getting flat until above the staff. Better far than flatness starting G-F region. The only other thing about these tubas is how loud they are. Unlike the BBb version which basically never overblows, the volume plateau where the horn is "filled up ...

Re: Talk me into or out of uShip
One common profile of a Ushipper is a motorcycle transporter who can throw some extra junk on top or in-between bikes. It works pretty good. It only gets handled by one guy, instead of multiple transfers in FedEx/UPS so numbers are in your favor. After seeing 2 FedEx doubles set trucks wrecked in ...

Re: Case ideas?
Or go nude. The tuba alone is much easier to handle than the tuba in case. Lighter, smaller, better grip in more places. You'll never damage it just carrying it under your arm. You can put a towel over it in the backseat and buckle it in. You would need the hard case however if you ever have to put ...

Re: The quest to find a 5/4 version of a 188
The problem with going bigger: A 6/4 is linearly that much bigger than a 4/4, but sound isn't linear. Sound is logarithmic. So you probably get 50% more output in one sense, but it seems more like 15%. Sometimes that's enough to get some reverberation from the shell or understage pit. But more ...

On a sousaphone as I recall left thumb is valve #1. Index, or index and middle combined is valve #2. Valve #3, who even uses that one.

Sees fancy tuba "in" his price range.
Imagines life together.
Basically the same feeling as a girl seeing a tall buff doctor with matching purebred dogs and a personal airplane on Tinder.

Re: Early 1900s Eb Horn parts?
This entire genre of instruments doesn't really "work". Intonation is way off by the top and the bottom of the staff, so really no more
usable low range than a trumpet. The newest mellophones from Yamaha are better, and maybe the British tenor horn which sounds like a muffled trombone.

Looks really small. Nearly euphonium-small. Could be small-but-mighty if it makes a noise that carries, but it's not gonna have any low end.

Anything that old is of marginal utility. It's probably gorgeous, because a lot of man-hours went into its construction back then, but those men...A didn't have the best tools or B didn't know exactly scientifically what they were doing. The earliest tubas that work to modern standards, to modern ...

Re: ebay: King contra-style 4v marching tuba
Those things are so awful. The "new" Yamaha is pretty much the last word in contras, the non convertible one. Way easier to move see and throw around, and imo the 4th valve is not worth a dime out on the field. the King sound is missed but really you need the King baritones alongside and they have ...
