Re: for you bass trombonists who remember the Holton "Glantz bar"

I've tried the Glantz...while not as bad as the Olds S24G/P24G split triggers (which will give you carpal tunnel in a matter of minutes), it's one of the worst.

Re: On false tones

Modern trumpets (which are really cornets) are what's called "half-length" instruments because the 1st partial (fundamental/pedal) isn't a usable note. Some trumpeters can play their pedal C very well with brute force, but it's in spite of the instrument rather than working with it. All flugelhorns ...

Re: F tuba low C

It seems to me that second rotor strategies on bass trombones are due to their being more afraid of fifth position than we are of f tuba low c. Some bass trombonists definitely seem to avoid 5th. The way I use the valves (usually staying near the middle of the slide), I am around 5th a lot - using ...

Re: F tuba low C

One thing that IS true is that many of us younger bass trombonists tend to prefer the Gb valve to the F valve. For me it's the default for all Cs, Bs, Fs, and Es that you would normally play on the F valve. … and for Db and Gb, too? Or do they have the same problem (intonation against the slide s ...

Re: F tuba low C

The whole reason trombonists started putting fancy valves on their horns is because for a long time Bach trombones were the standard, and had small rotors that often made playing down there harder than it needed to be. Modern rotors nowadays play fabulously well everywhere, and every trombonist has ...

Re: Tenor Trombone recommendation?

What I would do in your situation is forget the 605 or Ambassador and instead go buy the 1961 Holton Galaxy that arpthark is selling right here on this forum . I used to own one of these (.485-.500" dual bore, all nickel) and it was extremely bright. Worked perfectly for Dixieland and second line ...

Re: Tenor Trombone recommendation?

The 605 and 605F were .491", same as the 1305 Tempo (or pre-2B single bore Liberty). Was the 605 narrow (as are old-old "Cleveland" student model and all subsequent "beginner" models) or wide (as with the pro-models) ? Narrow, as was the 605F. The ORIGINAL (yes?) Tempo was put out to compete with ...

It's rather tall looking to be in C. Methinks it's a Bb Saxhorn. (Couesnon still [?] makes them in both pitches.)
PGM Couesnon was liquidated in June, sadly.

Re: stuff that some trumpet players believe

I mean...everything DOES make a difference (even if it is indescribably small), and that is magnified on smaller instruments like trumpet. I think those Lefreque plates are the most hideous-looking accessory ever invented for a musical instrument, and I would certainly never pay money for one. But I ...

Re: attn junk drawer hoarders: alto horn mouthpiece?

You'll want an actual alto horn mouthpiece if you buy it - the other mouthpieces that fit the shank don't really match the instrument. Denis Wicks are the best, but expensive. For a cheap option, go with the Kelly 3W (not the 6V, which is for marching mellophone). I have one and it's a nice player ...

Re: Non-tuba content: opinions on King 3B valve trombone?

Well, the thought would be you could get a trombone originally designed as Bb/ascending C (especially if it retains the Bb-length slide), reverse the rotor so that it stands in C, and then lengthen the valve to go down to G or F to be chromatic. Or even better...add a 2nd valve!

Re: Non-tuba content: opinions on King 3B valve trombone?

As far as an "F attachment" would be concerned, I'd decide on that length, once I determined what would be the most advantageous (maybe...?? fully-chromatic with only one valve - particularly considering the eight (??) position slide. Yes, a Bb-length slide gives 8 positions in C. Thein used to ...

Re: Non-tuba content: opinions on King 3B valve trombone?

This sounds like a good instrument for Mexican Banda music, which is prone to using valve instruments instead of slide trombones. Banda trombonists exclusively use valve trombones in C. I suppose you could get away with playing a Bb, but if you play in a real banda they're gonna notice. Bb ...

Re: Non-tuba content: opinions on King 3B valve trombone?

Once again, I have the opportunity to post this great video (Facebook, so you gotta have one) of the Royal Concertgebouw trombone section playing Falstaff on 3 King valve trombones (and cimbasso). One day I'd like to own a set of 3 matched valve trombones and a cimbasso so I can outfit a whole ...

Re: HornGuys is out; LowBrassWerks for now...

I have to wonder if part of the reason is that they are somewhere in between a small boutique shop like the BrassArk and a big store like Dillon. We really don't have any sort of big store you can go to try lots of factory instruments/mouthpieces in the LA area, which has always been very odd to me ...

Re: Wesex making a piston BBb/CC cimbasso

I’m actually thinking in the realm of seldom used low brass things, an actual substitute for the ophicleide with valves and modern pitch with the bell in similar dimensions with similar orientation would be pretty cool in terms of offering an option in timbre that’s not super accessible at the mom ...
