I just about have this tall stack of charts about 95% learned/solid/quick mute insertion choreography/tricky samba rhythms (that show up an octave and a half higher than the previous measure)/etc, etc... all worked out. A few more times through the stack and - hopefully - I'll receive nothing but smiles from my colleagues and the stick-man.

prototype cimbasso mouthpiece report: (with another week's experience)

- The bloke-built F cimbasso sounds MUCH more like a (bass) trombone than with the PREVIOUSLY-HAD-BEEN-USING (somewhat shallow) mouthpiece, with a slightly-less-than-average tuba-size throat that I HAD PREVIOUSLY been using with the cimbasso.

1/8" LESS cup depth and more of a bass trombone-size throat (rather than tuba-size-range throat) do the trick... and (at least for me) the 32.3mm #1 profile rim (which is narrower than I use on various tubas, but wide enough to offer some wonderful "bark" in the contrabass pitch range)..I'm in heaven.

I have a few ledger-lines-above-the-staff G's in this show, and one A-flat just above that (at the tail-end of the show), and I'm able to play through the book, and hit a nice A-flat...even though (at home) I'm not taking an "intermission".

I'll get serious about talking about possibly offering these two models for sale - once I get past this show. (I need the shallow/cimbasso prototype through next weekend.)

With long-reach-to-the-front-of-the-bell muting (bucket/cup/plunger), difficult-to-manage-with-cimbasso-floor-pegs "in hat" (ie. play into the stand) passages, I'm not wanting to deal with page turns, so I'm going to cut out a piece of thin masonite or pegboard that is 4' x 1', as the most number of pages per chart is four.

I would like to post some specs here, and also find out if I can get one of them back quickly enough (after a scan) to use in March.

(I was going to push to complete that "B-flat bass trombone 6-valve cimbasso" project by then, but - after looking at Dvorak 7 and Sibelius Vln. trom. 3 parts - it looks like I can easily use the F instrument on those pieces, which would take some pressure off.)

If I can get that one mouthpiece back by then, I'm going to post some specs. and take some orders.
I might (??) advertise the small F/cimbasso mpc. additionally on the facebook cimbasso page, but - otherwise - I'm going to TRY to limit introductory/first-run pricing to subscribers here and/or those who respond to this thread.

If you have a small and small-shank E-flat (as Mr. Groovlow coined the phrase) "parlor tuba", the shallow/small throat/small shank one is probably something that would play it very well.

If you own a jinbao cimbasso or other cimbasso (F/E-flat) you might REALLY LIKE the cimbasso mouthpiece.
It's enough shallower than my "Solo" cup to notice...not "crazy shallow", but NOTICEABLY shallower, and the throat size is down in the 7.Xmm range.
The embouchure opening is NOT "tiny": 32.3mm
Again, that mouthpiece should also be a winner for "parlor tubas" (quite-a-few-decades-old small-bore/small-size E-flat tubas with small shank receivers). This "cimbasso" mouthpiece (to be redundant) is being offered in SMALL (bass trombone) shank and STANDARD (American) shank.

FOR THOSE FOR WHOM I'VE RESERVED MOUTHPIECES...

It probably seems as though things are moving really slowly, but ONE EACH of the manufactured versions of the two basic styles are ON THEIR WAY TO ME (to make certain that they're right, before running off a bunch of them). Part of the delay (other than the machine shop getting around to my project, in their queue) was the plating...(I'd like to test them for more than a couple of minutes each, without ending up with green lips, so they were plated).

The production sample/prototype on the left is the HbII style (with a standard shank and also available with a euro shank) and the one on the right is the really shallow/small throat one (yet still "TUBA") with an English/small/bass'bone size shank (and also available with a standard shank).

Just so you guys know, I'm sending my prototypes and the production samples back with some comments. They are almost right, and they will be just right.

So far, the Helleberg mouthpiece plays just as well as my prototype but slightly different, and the shallow one just isn't meeting the mark yet. It will.
