RIP Dennis Askew

Post by BopEuph »

Just received word that Dennis Askew passed.

I don't even remember if I met him, but I was at ITEC when it was at UNC Greensboro. That particular conference was the turning point of my interest in becoming a professional musician.

His brother-in-law posted on Facebook that he died of complications of pneumonia.

Oh! Rest in peace, Dennis…

What terrible news! I've known him since 1988. We were never friends IRL but kept up an occasional online conversation for many years.

I had the pleasure of meeting Dennis on our trip to Nag's Head years ago. Very pleasant man and a great family man.

Doc AsKew was a great champion of the tuba community, but an even better person. His impact as a teacher and administrator is second to the impact he had on others as a mentor, father, and friend. As devastating as it is that he is gone, but I am at least comforted knowing that Doc positively impacted all that knew him.

If you would like to honor Doc AsKew, his wife started a fundraiser to create a scholarship in his memory. You can donate to the fund via Facebook here.

Wow. Very sad. Way too young. Many memories of him at ITECS and USABTECs are flooding back. I have especially good memories of knowing him behind the scenes at the UNC Greensboro ITEC in 2002.

I worked with him for a summer at a music camp. What a great guy. I am so sorry to hear this.
