Tuba Tuesday: Kalashen CC Kaiser tuba

Post by bisontuba »

Happy Tuesday Tuesday

This Tuba Tuesday the Museum highlight’s its largest valve bore CC tuba: a M J Kalashen “Kaiser” (large) model, circa 1920, four rotary valve CC tuba with a valve bore of .855” or 21.75 mm. The largest valve bore in the collection, which is on two of the Museum’s BBb instruments, is 23 mm or .902.” Valve bore is usually defined as the diameter of the air passages through the valves.

Mark J Kalashen was born in Russia in 1867 and emigrated to New York City in 1892. He began selling imported instruments circa 1903 and continued until circa 1930.’

Not much is known about which European makers he imported from but it is almost certain that our Kalashen CC tuba with rotary valves was made in Germany. The Museum also has a Kalashen BBb four rotary valve tuba of similar design.
