WTB Mouthpiece for BBb tuba

Post by Hanlon92 »

Like the title says. I’m a doubler from bass trombone and I recently obtained a decent tuba. I somehow lost my mouthpiece since I last played so I’m looking for a new one. Something middle of the road size wise would be preferable based on my memory. So please not an enormous mouthpiece (or a helleberg). Other than that you guys tell me! $100 or less, exception made for a Giddings & Webster mouthpiece... I REALLY like their stuff.

If you remember what mouthpiece you were using, or possibly some of its dimensions, that would go a long way to help us make a recommendation. Also, what tuba do you have? The receiver size may be a factor in finding a replacement. Your budget of $100 or less should open up many possibilities, maybe even new models. Not quite a shameless plug, but we sell most Tucci mouthpiece models for $99.

Good luck in your search.

That’s the problem... I don’t remember at all what it was. All I remember is it was on the medium to smallerish size of the tuba mouthpiece spectrum and it was a Bachish shape. At this point of getting back into playing tuba, I’m sure practice will help more than any specific mouthpiece, but I remember struggling with huge mouthpieces and hellebergs

How many stars are in the galaxy?

When all else fails, start with a Faxx copy of either a Conn Helleberg 120 (funnel) or Bach 18 (rounded cup) and go from there: cheap, decent quality, mid-sized.

If Hellebergs and "Huge" mouthpieces don't work, it's likely a large throat bore and cup depth issue causing air issues or feedback issues. I'd second trying the "Bach 18 or close relative variants" first (medium cup) and adjusting from there. (Another one whom Hellebergs are the Bain of my existence).

Considering OP is a doubler, I’ll mention trying a Bach 24AW first.
