Engravings -- show them here!

Post by bort2.0 »

Here's a thread to show your bell engravings here! I'll post mine when I get a chance to take better photos...

Old, new, thrilling and bland... Let's see and talk about 'em!

I just saved a good-condition 60-year-old Miraphone bell kranz off of a ruined bell. It is considerably more ornate than those engraved today. It’s dangerous to buff a kranz that is not supported by a bell, but I will try to clean it up enough to where its engraving can be seen in a picture.

Here is mine. They do not engrave at all these days. I paid extra to have them drop it off at a local engraver that they have worked with and prefer. It is very nice, but the aspect of the letters is incorrect. They are too tall and narrow. The actual letters (in all other respects identical even down to the engraving "strokes") are not tall at all, and they are very wide. I have not yet installed this. I am not sure I want to. However, if that day comes, the part is sitting here, nice and pretty and ready to go.

Not to get into semantics, but the engraving itself doesn't look "incorrect." Perhaps it doesn't exactly match the vintage styling that you wanted to be copied, but it looks like it was actually done quite well, by hand, and (most importantly) spelled correctly. :P

I have to hop on my other computer to find my photos. Lots of tubas... some done by hand, some laser engraved, some stamped.

Ok, here are the photos I could find of my old tubas. Apparently, I was REALLY bad about taking photos of the engravings, and took a lot of really bad pictures. These are the best bad pictures. I don't have one of my Alex 163 yet, but it's the expected "Gebr Alexander Mainz" on the kranz.

Also missing photos of my old VMI CC (with the German eagle), and the expected B&S engraving on my PT6, PT7, and GR-41.

Oh goodness I've owned too many tubas. I gotta cut this out!

This thread is great. I like the engraving. Why not visually enhance these wonderful instruments and show the pride and craftsmanship that went into their construction.
I’ve oftentimes thought about having someone engrave my horns.

Here is a 60-year-old "MIRAFONE" kranz that I saved from a trashed bell (for possible future transplant to another bell).

I suspect that quite a few have not seen these delicately-engraved kranz's from this era, so (though both risky to me and to the kranz to buff this kranz when not supported by a bell) I buffed it - enough so that you folks could see it.

Beautiful, thanks Joe!

I need to take a photo of my Alex's kranz engraving. Nothing on the bell itself, just the Kranz.

I'll run around the place (sometime in the next day or two) and snap some Buescher - et al - bells' engraving designs.
