Man...if I lived closer...AND had the bread.
My 2900S was stolen like 8 years ago. When I got the insurance check, I decided it was better to put the money toward more sensible things (like rent, which I was struggling with at the time), and it forced me to really take tuba more seriously.
I had maybe three gigs on that instrument, while working all the time on bass, so it seemed like a dumb idea to blow money on it again.
But I keep dreaming that my horn ended up in my hands again, and the first thing I do in EVERY SINGLE DREAM is play through all the Bach suites. I still can't get through them on tuba.
FWIW, if that's a euro shank, it's likely a 2900. If it's a bass trombone shank, it's likely a 2950. And I think the 2900 is 11 1/4" bell, while the 2950 is 12 1/4". The latter of which is just BARELY too big to fit in an overhead compartment.

I think after everything, pretty sure it’s a 2900 that had the lead pipe replaced with a large shank receiver sometime down the road. The bell measures 11.4”.
Funny you mention the Bach suites, because I find them to be most playable, for me at least, on the Eb tuba I played my last year in undergrad, followed by the 3/4 CC, and then euphonium, and then BBb. Hopefully once I’m done moving every year I can look into purchasing a tuba again.

I'd love an Eb/F bass tuba at some point. I only have two BBb horns right now, and I'll probably never really be happy playing the suites on any instrument unless I can play that first prelude at pitch. I can't hear the suites in any key other than the key it was written in (5th suite gets a pass with its lute suite counterpart in g minor). One of the first trailers I saw for The Soloist had the first prelude bumped up a half step, and I'm not sure why. I simply can't play the first 8 notes of the suite without chipping a note...yet.
As for playability, do you mean at pitch on all of these instruments? So Eb and CC were easier than on euph? I wonder if it's just the horn you're most comfortable on? I haven't played a euphonium since mine was stolen, and I feel like I'd be competition ready in a couple weeks on any solo I've worked on in the past if I was forced. So I wonder if an Eb would truly be easier for me, too?

Yeah, for me it was definitely a comfort thing where I was playing those instruments more than any other at the time or at any time. I just wasn’t able to get back to comfortable on the euph as I had hoped after rarely playing it in college, compared to bass bone and tuba which I played everyday.

Yeah, for me it was definitely a comfort thing where I was playing those instruments more than any other at the time or at any time. I just wasn’t able to get back to comfortable on the euph as I had hoped after rarely playing it in college, compared to bass bone and tuba which I played everyday.
