Happy Tuba Tuesday
This Tuba Tuesday the Museum features its oldest EEb helicon: a Distin, three piston valve, EEb helicon circa 1870. The Distin family originated in England and had a long history - starting in 1846 as Distin & Sons, London, England - of performing on, selling and making their own brass instruments. Henry Distin emigrated to New York City in 1877 and in 1886 established a factory in Williamsport, PA, under the name of the Henry Distin Mfg. Co., which lasted until 1909. This Distin EEb helicon has on the bell: Distin / Makers/ 9 & 10 G. Newport St. / London. This makes it the only English Distin instrument in the collection as well as the Museum’s oldest EEb helicon.
