Some interesting entries. I had no idea there was such a thing as a High F Horn but there it was.

And she did a good job getting sound out of it!!

I was also oddly attracted to the “Dot Polka” entry. :smilie7:

My friend Howard Levine is one of the amateur contestants. Please take a look at his video and consider voting for Howard.

The winners...

I gravitated toward some of the more oddball entrants, but there you go.

It's called a descant horn. My wife has one. If you get a triple horn it is usually a double horn with a descant side. It is the same octave as a marching band mellophone, whereas the low F side of a horn is the same octave as an F tuba.

Fun stuff… :coffee:

I listened to nearly all of the entries after they were first posted. It took a while.

There were some really fine submissions among the long list of entries. I wonder what people use for criteria when judging submissions.

Once you got in, maybe some real stinkers were left out, it was like any cute baby/talent/popularity interwebs contest, best I can tell... :tuba:

Sometimes, my curiosity is piqued about such things. In any case, congratulations to the winners!

I didn’t have time to make a submission on the helicon (I like those kinds of projects), but I didn’t fret, since I didn’t figure I’d have a chance because some badass entries (and there were some, for sure) would win, and rightly so.

I hope they do another promo like that. I’d like to participate just to do it.

I thought that play-along you did on the Eb was entry-worthy!! :tuba:

I appreciate your vote of confidence, but bass lines on old standards or German polka music aren’t very popular. Not academic or heady enough to be legit. Were there even any jazz/swing/polka entries?

“Dot Polka” was not really a polka as we know it polka, so no.

That would have made you more special, especially on the sponsors instrument!! :smilie7:

Playing Blasmusik on helicon is not unusual in Germany, but I don’t know who else is playing blasmusik on a Wessex, but I’m confident it’s not many. It’s definitely... uh... unique! Kind of a big fish/small pond thing. More like a frog in a puddle. Hell, maybe that’s interesting to folks or to Wessex. Or maybe not. I’m not sure how many Wessex helicons are being used publicly or professionally anyway besides Carl Kleinstuber and me. Of course @UncleBeer is the freekin bomb.com and I'm not, but I digress...

Was there even a helicon among the video submissions?

I'm pretty sure I saw a cimbasso entry and even a duet entry featuring opheclide from @Snake Charmer (he'll correct me if I'm mistaken. Maybe tournister entry. I'd have to go back and look (if they are even available). Cool stuff.

My entry was a duet with Ophicleide and French C Tuba. I just couldn't decide which one to use :teeth:
You can still find it here: viewtopic.php?f=6&t=1976
or on Youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gBPQZC4UOMM
Hope to see your Helicon next time there

It’s nice to see and hear you, especially featuring a couple of the more unique instruments.

I’ll have to put something together if they ever do it again. There’s no shortage of ideas. Just a shortage of time.

I sent them my Bari Heliconte video.

They weren't feeling it, apparently.

I play my Wessex BBb Helicon all over the SF Bay Area, fwiw.

Here's a livestream I did recently of afro-peruvian music:
