TTBB Gospel Music

Post by MN_TimTuba »

I'm looking for recommendations from any of you who are active in a men's gospel quartet.
We have a new pastor who is an actual 1st tenor and can belt out high G's and A's, so rather than making do with SATB choral arrangements I'm looking for good TTBB music in gospel/southern gospel/barbershop styles. What have you used that you really enjoy?
The publisher/retailer sites I've checked do have their multitudinous listings, but I'd rather hear from your experience.
Thank you in advance.
Tim

Mark Blackwood grew up in my neighborhood and was a childhood friend and classmate of mine. Send him a Facebook friend request and tell him that you are my friend, and then tell him what you’re looking for.

Joe,
Couldn't ask for a better resource - will do, and thanks!

The Blackwood family actually had a music store – in a big old house with a huge covered concrete porch - directly across the street from our elementary school.
“Blackwood House of Music”

Besides his own page, Mark also created a gospel quartet fb page, and you could get on there and ask all the same sorts of questions of others.

Frankly, I just don’t know how much his own quartet relies on actual sheet music...(??)

He has a pretty good sense of humor...(ie. very approachable)
This showed up on my "timeline" thingy, just now...

clowning around with Larry Gatlin...

Most any of Jack Schrader’s TTBB arrangements are good. This is the first collection and I think there’s at least 8.

My trombone quartet has some Gaither men's quartet stuff in the book, and we play right off the vocal parts. There's a lot of Gaither stuff to sort through, but much of it was/is very good, and translates directly to low brass ensembles in many cases.

I sing with a barbershop quartet and chorus. We have a large library. I've written arrangements, the director has written arrangements, but the bulk (including a bunch of gospel/religious tunes) has come from The Barbershop Harmony Society (formerly SPEBSQSA).
