Patina like that is priceless. Too bad the rim and interior aren't shown.

I'm sure it would polish off and leave an attractive surface, a little like sandblasted.

Yes. CHEAP 'stainless' steel will rust. I once designed over a million bucks worth of food grade equipment for a company and specified 304 stainless steel just to have a bunch of goof-balls in the shop try to save a few bucks by using regular rods for the welding instead of using low-carbon rods.

I understand they use SAE 304 and 15-5 stainless steel. Both considered to have excellent resistance to corrosion.

Might be interesting to know, dipped in what? Maybe, for a lot less than $360, you could have this patina on your blokepiece or whatever. The corrosion on the shank looks like it might have been somewhat polished off by subsequent insertion, am I right? Like the previous owner enjoyed playing this rusty mouthpiece.

Years ago I had an 8’ SS darkroom sink fabricated for my photo studio. I didn’t know anything about different grades of stainless steel. After a couple of years the sink started to rust in the corners. There is a passivating solution you can get for SS and it seemed to work, but I was also careful about drying the sink after use and that may have helped as well.

Were the corners welded? If so... the fabricators used the wrong grade of rod.
