Thomann Tubas?

Post by LargeTuba »

Does anyone know anything about Thomann Tubas? They look Chinese, but I've never seen these designs before.

The bottom one... there was a short-lived MW model like that, which Willi Brandstrotter used for a little while. The idea is that it's all right angles for the airflow.

What’s the link to the zigzag valve one? I couldn’t find it.

The first tuba you posted, the F, looks a lot like a version of the Yamaha YFB-822.

At first, I thought so too... But then the bill diameter is more like the smaller F tuba. Also, it's sort of lacks a signature " smile " of tubing underneath the valve section. I actually kind of wondered if it was copied off of the Roger Bobo model, but it doesn't really look like that either.

I remember seeing the tuba like the bottom one from some custom maker name kunst once before. The zigzag is distinctive for sure, and I think I've seen that on some French horns before as well. Again, it's all about having the airflow go through an X pattern in the valves to give more eopen airlow

The zigzag looks cool along with the off axis fifth valve. Just couldn’t find it on the site.

Here's their 5 valve model. It was originally from kunst-brass.de but looks like they no longer make tubas.

The top one is a copy of a Kalison F tuba.

The bottom one I can't find on the Thomann site.

The bottom one (as bort2.0 said) looks a lot like a Meinl-Weston made for the Mnozil brass.
There are some brief shots of it in this video. He didn't seem to play it for very long compared to the other instruments he has used.

After I finally found a good picture of the brief Mnozil tuba, I'm going to disagree with myself. The second tuba pictured above is not this MW tuba:

@cjk, I’m glad you couldn’t find it either, as I was starting to wonder if I was missing something. I was scouring that site several times trying to find it.

It’s certainly an interesting design.

I remember a zig-zag one advertised by Thein many years ago, but cannot find any ref to it whatsoever on the old WWW. This was back around 1997 or so.

Dang, I'm getting old… :coffee:
