A friend WTB: Decent tuba or sousa for $600-1000 (or maybe more)

Post by Doc »

A friend of mine is interested in buying a decent-playing BBb tuba or sousaphone to get back into playing. He hopes to spend $600-1000.

I sent him this link from @WakinAZ
https://tucson.craigslist.org/msg/d/tuc ... 76286.html

Sent him a couple links from Dillon, BBC, and Mack Brass, but I also know sometimes there are instruments not yet on websites.

Anyone else have something or know of something that is in (or reasonably close) to that budget?

@bloke
@Dan Schultz
@Lee Stofer
@Matt Walters
@BaltimoreBrassCo
@MackBrass

Thanks!

Where's he at? I presume shipping figures into the budget somewhat.

Thumbs up at getting something from one of the above high grade repair folk, even is a basic work horse rather than a possible high end tuba for cheap which may end up having something frustratingly not working right.

Taylor Music has ‘econo’ overhauled BBb’s for under $2,000 with apparent free shipping. Most of those are 3 valved though. None are of the Chinese persuasion……

They offered me $300 trade in value for the 186 I have that I sold and got back recently. It's a solid $2000 horn, I wouldn't necessarily waste my money or time with these guys. IMHO...

Granted, Taylor's is not the 'ideal' purchasing choice but considering the given price purchase limitations......Well, there's always the ebay roulette wheel, although my 1901 King Eb monster was a great ebay find at under $500. Not sure a Chinese horn is a consideration, which is why I mentioned 'the Taylor' as it appears their BBb 'econo overhauls' are American made instruments. Just trying to provide some helpful leads, not necessarily a recommendation for any particular business. Hope the concerned party finds the right horn within their budget limitations.
Might also give Oberloh Woodwind and Brass Works a try.
