Found: F tuba around 2k

Post by martyneilan »

I am looking for a 5 valve (or 6) F tuba that plays in tune with a usable low register for around 2,000 USD. I have seen BMB and ZO go for around this lately, so I know it isn't impossible. No first-generation Jinbao, please. Cosmetics are not important.

I can't send a direct link, but brassark.com has had this Miraphone 180 for quite a while.

I think Wade the Elephant did major rebuilding on one of these to open up the low register. I would probably prefer something a tad bigger, but I will keep that in mind. Doesn't the 180 have a horizontal tuning slide? The one at Brass Ark is vertical?!? It almost looks like a tenor tuba.

It's not that they are bad, it's just that there are often better options. They are older designs, and suffer greatly from the problems around low C, B, and Bb. Upper register sings and is nice... But if you need the full range, it usually takes a lot of work, and even then it's still not great.

Judging from the emblem on the bell and the linkage, it’s a Cerveny.

I knew that... I guess I should have said, "tell us about it."

Somehow that looks bigger than my rotary C tuba.
