Post by lost »

Well the OLD official list got lost in the great purge. Time to rebuild. Please share the place you go to get satisfactory tuba repairs and I'll update the original post.

We are blessed with many places in DFW that do a very nice job. I usually go to the main one in my hometown, Rivard brothers. Darryl isn't afraid of custom work, and he's a really nice guy

Houghton horns is north of me in Keller, Dennis and his shop have always done a great job

A new shop that I'm excited about is Denton Big Brass, It's owned by our very own @UncleBeer and his wife @LeanneDBB
Carl put together my frankentuba for me after my dad passed away and I didn't have time to complete the project, and he did an amazing job

Lee Stofer hasn't posted here yet, but I'll toot his horn anyway. :tuba:
He's in an actual cornfield in Eastern Iowa, not far from the Mississippi river!

For the record, though we all know it:

Joe Sellmansburger, Mid-South Music, Williston, TN

Matt Walters, Dillon Music, Woodbridge, NJ

I don't know Dan Oberloh's current operating status and backlog--he may be limiting projects more than used to be the case. Lee Stofer has already been mentioned. There are others, of course, but these four should be near the top of the list.

And Dan Schultz, aka the Village Tinker, though I think he's changed the name of his company, really excels at what I would call play-ready restorations and modifications, which is the kind that I like. Most will do these, too.

Yeah I only posted those close to me. Maybe we need to come up with a map with pushpins so people can find a shop in their area

This would be some of that helpful reference info we were talking about the other day. Maybe the info compiled into a map and posted as a sticky? Would the push pin map allow details for each push pin when clicked or mouse held over it? Kinda like how it works when googling restaurants in your area?

Let's not forget the quiet guy in the corner who doesn't get much publicity. Norm Epley from NRE Brassworks in Louisville. One of the nicest guys around willing to fix or create anything you want done and very honest. Couldn't recommend him more.

Regarding embedded maps...

https://www.phpbb.com/community/viewtopic.php?t=2390301

...that’s about the least fubar way I could see on the phpBB forum to do it and it’s still a massive kludge.

good info, thanks

Even if we can't embed the map, it's pretty easy to create a map account and just have a link to it

I'd like to add one here if I could as well. I've had an ultrasonic cleaning and some minor valve repair work done with Salazar Brass & Woodwind Repair who works out of same shop as Sawday Horns in Long Beach, Ca. (As you might know, Don Sawday is one of the tuba designers for Eastman). Between the two guys there depending on work load, they can pretty much do any project for you and for a great price and turn around rate.

Two names for those of us living on the Canadian Prairies:

Kevin Junk - "Musicraft' here in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. Kevin is an independent repair person with his own shop. Over thirty years of experience and very skilled. He is honest and reliable and also is a tremendous musician himself as he is an oboe player with our city's symphony orchestra.

Brad Litster -"Long&McQuade" retail store here in Saskatoon. Brad is a very talented repair person who can look after any major or minor repairs to tubas. Also honest and reliable and a member of our city's symphony orchestra in the percussion section.

Both of these gentlemen have looked after my horns and as I know how fussy I am about my horns, I can attest to their skills and patience. We are lucky to have them here in Western Canada! :tuba: :tuba:

1935 King "Symphony" Bass 3 valve BBb Tuba

What would also be useful would be a list of shops that can do valve (piston or rotary) overhaul and rebuilding (plating, honing, etc.), such as what used to be done by Anderson.

Rob Phillips at Buckeye Brass & Winds. Located in Plain City, Ohio, which is just northwest of Columbus. He's worked on all my horns, and even built my current horn.
