WTB: large F tuba

Nothing Chinese or Czech

Things like the larger MW-45 variants (rotary or piston like the 45-SLP), Miraphone 181 (not the 180), or B&S PT-whatever. Something else I'm forgetting too...

I know about a Kanstul, and will think about it, too. But really hoping for a larger F.

Budget will limit options, I'm sure. Plus, there aren't so many F tubas for sale these days.

Anyway, throwing this out there, see what might be out there. I might be on a bass tuba kick for a little while.

The 181 is larger than the 180. And I forget what the sizes are for the B&S tubas... but believe that none of their F tubas are particularly small. The PT-15 is probably the biggest (except for the Apollo* [PT-16?] that briefly existed and didn't do very well)


*I believe this is the Apollo F tuba in this video -- lots of valves and slide trigger usage. He sounds just fine on it, but might be a lot of work.

You could likely find a Miraphone 181 in your budget. The 180 is not a large F tuba (which is what you asked about). Having tested a couple, I wouldn't recommend the 180 as a small F tuba, especially for someone who does not have the time to stay up on it.

An older PT 10, PT 15, PT 16 (that's not an Apollo; and the Apollo has a reputation for shitty intonation), or a rare Symphonie (not worn out) would fit the bill.

A MW 45, 46, 45SLP would work, and might be found in your budget.

Rudy Meinl F tubas are rare and typically not in your budget.

You could also consider a Kanstul 80.
