Re: Ass. Prof Tuba Tennesse Tech Job
It is "Asst." and not "Ass." It makes a difference. Number one on the list is that this is for an academic position, so you really make the place look bad with this misspelling. And secondly, it looks laughable. Perhaps, for posterity, the OP could edit this to correct the very unfortunate title? Seriously, would it have taken much more effort to just spell out the words?
Asst. Prof. of Tuba - Tennessee Tech. Job
or
Asst Prof of Tuba - Tennessee Tech (Why is the word "job" even included in this?)
or
Assisstant Professor of Tuba — Tennessee Tech
but
Ass. Prof?
Wow. The American Ivory Tower is crumbling and it is pretty dang embarrassing…

Re: Assistant Prof Tuba Tennesse Tech Job
I've always liked the title "Assistant Professor." I've known many "Assistant" professors before, I ask them "which professor are you assisting?" Usually blank stares (not getting the joke) or eye rolls and the real answer of "it means non-tenured".

It is a rank, like "lieutenant", which you might want to look up, heh, heh…

Heh: not unlike my former position with a European orchestra, where they continued to insist I was a tutti (section) player. Duh...who's the principal tuba then?

Re: Assistant Prof Tuba Tennesse Tech Job
It would be far more accurate (and downright more polite) to say it's a contract position. Or perhaps a temp-to-hire position. Or a placeholder position until the seat is filled permanently. I guess those roles are good player development and experience for younger people... but stress-inducing for trying to put together a career. Then again "musician" has never been the most stable of careers.
Which also reminds me (for some reason) of food packaging labels, with nonsensical stuff added for marketing purposes...
Like "Gluten Free" on products that don't normally contain gluten ("Gluten free frozen strawberries!")
or
Chicken labeled as "raised without hormones" -- it's ALL raised that way, because raising it WITH hormones is prohibited by law.

Re: Assistant Prof Tuba Tennesse Tech Job
It’s a way to not have to pay the tuba person principal pay, in this instance. Principal pay is often 10-20% higher than section pay.bort2.0 wrote: ↑Wed Apr 13, 2022 4:54 pmIt would be far more accurate (and downright more polite) to say it's a contract position. This exactly. Plus an opportunity for backhanded insult, at which northern Europeans excel.

Re: Assistant Prof Tuba Tennesse Tech Job
Regardless of how highfalutin, they are still all Mercury salesmen who are required to own Mercurys - in order to be allowed to sell them.
A few older ones - who have not yet retired, were hired prior to the requirement of buying a Mercury in order to be allowed to sell Mercurys.
This remark aside, R. Winston Morris really cared/cares about his students, and these will be large shoes to fill.
