Show us your Oom-pahs!!!

Post by Crymzon1980 »

I haven't seen a section/topic where we could show off our tubas, euphs or any low brass that we play or anything, so I'd like to be the first to start up and hope to see the many different horns that we have/had.
Image

My first owned tuba is an Indian copy of (supposedly) a Boosey & Hawkes Regent 3/4 Eb Tuba (not sure what exact model it was copied from) and it has been good for practicing at home, my mainly issue with it is the lacking of being able to play very quietly on it LOL.

My second tuba (recently got it yesterday) is a Besson Boosey & Hawkes 700 series Model 788 3/4 size BBb Tuba that I got off of eBay. I wanted to have a BBb Tuba to practice on at home as well but not get a 4/4 size because I don't think I could handle such a beast LOL. Now, this one didn't come with a case but has seen some better days in its life. Despite the dings and bangs it has endured, it still sounds quite nice, even though the G (treble clef) above the staff sounds a bit sharp LOL. Even with the flaws it has, I'm glad I am able to give it a new lease in life and maybe one day I can afford to get it in better shape :)

I can't wait to see what some of you all have and will bow before your greatness :bow2: :tuba:

Back row left to right: Eastman 853 Eb compensator, replaced in 2019 the Besson Eb I played for decades. Svenska Blasinstrumentfabriken F, 5 Berlin valves 1909, Wessex Bb ophicleide 2015. Front, left to right: Courtois french C tuba 1940 and Courtois Bb Saxhorn Basse 1978.
Every horn special in its own way, but all very nice to play!

These are the three I play in the orchestra. I have a few others, but these guys pay the bills.

Here is what I have right now. B&S MRP-C and Willson 3200 FA-5 F

I didn't expect to make a double horn switch this year, but needs and opinions change! I made the switch from a 5450 Thor and 2141 Eb.

When a trombone player hears the word "tuba" he hears "thing with valves". Here are my "things with valves".

Big one back right is a Mack 422 BBb 3/4. Still learning, but I'm a pro now because I got paid to oom-pah on East-ah. sorry.

Medium on the left is a Wessex Festivo. Euphonium. Obviously I like my valves on the front. It's an ergonomic thing.

Reclining one in front is Conn 24i. This is what I think a euphonium should sound like. Aside from the small shank receiver, this is my ideal.

Thing with valves in the middle is an Olds O21 - compact marching valve trombone (flugabone). It's fun, and a great place to learn. Valves is valves.

@jtm has a very interesting/nice 4/4 size rotary tuba, as well as a somewhat-rare large bore (with the bore as large as a Besson Imperial euphonium) 4-valve front-action bell-up Holton "American baritone" - which is surely the better part of a century old.

He should post pictures of those - as well as of anything else he has.

Here's a terrible photo of these instruments:

I also have an 1895 Conn Eb, but that's not really playable, so its not pictured.

That's an interesting call-out. I don't have good pictures of the 93-year-old Holton baritone, so I'll get some soon. It's fun to play, comfortable to hold, and in great shape.

Here's an interesting (to me) 4/4 rotary tuba, in C. It's the same height as a Miraphone 188, but not as stout, so it's pretty much sized like a 186 (but shorter).

Image

The valve keys, springs, and linkages are not original. It used to have S-links, and probably clock springs.

Here's the name on the krantz:

Image

The receiver says "West Germany", so it's newer than 1950 and older than 1990. I'd love to know more about it.

Maybe I'll pretend it's a Rudy Meinl stencil, like @bort2.0 got :tuba:

Being luxury car lovers, have four cars probably worth almost $15,000 (for the four). Pre-plandemic, they were probably only worth about $8000 bucks.
