Doug Whitten - RIP

Doug Whitten had a heart attack yesterday and they were not able to save him. He had just turned 54 years old a few days ago.

Rest in peace, Doug. You will be missed by a lot of folks out there. I am sorry you are gone.

I was honored to be able to meet him in-person at his school, quite a few years ago...I'm thinking it may well have been eight or more years go in Pittsburg (Kansas). LOL...He showed me all of their sousaphones, and was asking about the various ones.

It seems just a bit odd that (but it's due to my own advancing years, obviously) - everyone I knew from there is now gone, and not from having moved away. 😞

Rest in peace, Doug.

Although I did not know him, I definitely see by the posts on social media that he was an amazing person, musician, and mentor.

I met him in 2007 at SCRTEC in Austin, TX, briefly, but networked with him. He was a very supportive person. When I messaged him on facebook, he had just received his doctorate and I called him Dr. Whitten, and he insisted me on calling him Doug. This was a foreign concept, calling a faculty member by their first name, so I called him Dr. Doug. What a loss to our community, very saddening.
