' always a shock and very saddening when someone leaves us as a relatively young man.
I was honored to be able to meet him in-person at his school, quite a few years ago...I'm thinking it may well have been eight or more years go in Pittsburg (Kansas). LOL...He showed me all of their sousaphones, and was asking about the various ones.
It seems just a bit odd that (but it's due to my own advancing years, obviously) - everyone I knew from there is now gone, and not from having moved away.
I met him in 2007 at SCRTEC in Austin, TX, briefly, but networked with him. He was a very supportive person. When I messaged him on facebook, he had just received his doctorate and I called him Dr. Whitten, and he insisted me on calling him Doug. This was a foreign concept, calling a faculty member by their first name, so I called him Dr. Doug. What a loss to our community, very saddening.
