FS: Besson New Standard compensating Eb tuba - 15" bell

Post by Billy M. »

Hello all,

I decided to break down and purchase an F tuba. That means that one of the others in my stable has to go.

In this case, it is my sadly not-oft-played Besson New Standard Eb tuba with a 15" bell.

The horn is a fully compensating 3+1 Eb. I purchased it several years ago when I started to get into more orchestral and smaller ensemble playing.

The bell has had repair work (prior to my ownership) and there are some rough spots in the bottom bow and near the outside ferrule. I did have a standard shank receiver installed so that it can fit conventional American shank mouthpieces. Still has old metal valve guides but valves work well when oiled liberally.

It will not win any beauty contests but it plays and the smaller 15" bell makes for a nice F tuba alternative. Was originally planning to use the horn for Bydlo back in March until higher ups made decisions against playing certain pieces of music with the current geo-political climate in Eastern Europe.

Horn is located in Pensacola, FL. I will not ship. However, I am willing to travel up to 200 miles for hand delivery to a guaranteed buyer.

Asking price is $2,100.00 for the horn and Olka B1A mouthpiece. No case. If you come to Pensacola, I may have some flexibility in pricing.

Will have pictures up soon.

Sadly I haven't had the time to really get the pictures up. I do have some available if you wish to receive by email. PM me with that info and I'll get them sent to you.

If you would like to email me the pictures - as well as making it really easy for me and including a link to this thread, I don’t mind sticking the pictures up for you really quickly.

A 15 inch bell 3+1 Besson compensating E-flat is one of those tubas that I would own - if not for my own strict self-imposed rules about how many tubas I allow myself to own. I love these things.

These fall into the category of the “tubas that play so easily that one tends to forget that they are playing a tuba” tubas.

I would definitely be interested in this horn, but video of the valves would be nice, and I live in Michigan, so obviously it can't be unless you were to reevaluate the shipping policy on this. I'm also curious if you know how much this horn weighs?

None of my business Billy, but a tuba that short that’s made of brass that thick with a bell that small is probably going to ship pretty successfully. …and since it’s not in perfect condition, it also won’t arrive perfect, will it?

This is one of the few Besson tubas I would own if I could. They play great, but I guess Joe already covered that. I'm sorry I don't have the filthy lucre; otherwise, this tuba would be mine.

It’s sort of looks like Billy and I have the same sort of philosophy:
When there end up being tubas that overlap each other’s purposes a little bit too much and - thus - aren’t going to be played all that often – and no matter how wonderful they are (and these things are definitely wonderful - as well as being rare found in good playing condition and as modern A=440 instruments), maybe it’s time to sell one of them.

This is a great orchestral bass tuba, a great brass quintet instrument, a great carry-around polka/dixieland instrument, and absolutely the pinnacle British brass band E-flat tuba.

something else:
Billy didn’t ask me to post anything in his thread.
I wasn’t aware that he was planning to sell it until I stumbled across this thread, and volunteered to web host the pictures for him.

Well, Billy and I are in cahoots. He paid me $50,000 worth of Topps baseball cards (gum not included) to help him sell this tuba.

Okay, that was a lie. I don't know Billy. I was not paid by Billy. I was not asked for an endorsement by Billy. Billy now probably hates both the bloke and the elephant, TBH, heh, heh…

I just commented because I *really* like these. And I wanted to bump the ad to help him find a buyer because THIS TUBA DESERVES TO BE PLAYED.

So…

BUMP!
