emergency reliable repair to a Miraphone valve guide (warning: not very horn-porny)

Post by bloke »

These are small brass washers encased in plastic with a plastic extension.

The plastic extension breaks off, so the embedded washer must be released from the plastic, brazed onto metal that is the dimension of the broken off plastic, reinserted into the plastic and reinstalled.

Of course (as in this case) when it is found that the valve casing (this one: obviously #1) was also FUBAR (as was the #2 casing) that's a bit of a pisser (particularly when there's urgency and a ticking clock), but whatever...

It ain't "purdy", and it's only rough-filed but (seriously...) the only thing that matters (along with it being small enough to fit in that track on the top of the piston) is the little bit that sticks out past the circumference of the piston body.

Oh yeah...missing spring :eyes: ...but I remembered that I had some of those Miraphone/M-W/B&S cone-shaped valve springs in my sock drawer, so I was able to avoid using a King/Yamaha/whatever.

It's repaired...in time/on time, and the oem replacement has been ordered.

The metal extension (due to the somewhat minimal surfaces silver brazed together) CAN be bent upwards via careless piston insertion...

but (expecting such) I filed the "front" down "short" enough so that the tip would STILL not drag in the slot EVEN IF bent upwards.

#1 was screwed up partway down (possibly jacked by someone grabbing the horn by the #1 slide… I don’t know…???)

#2 was coned in at the bottom…probably from torquing the bottom valve cap, sometime in the past.

That instrument is over yonder - rehearsing Carmina Burana today…

“Interesting…”, he says while loosening all of his bottom valve caps.
