The first tuba I ever bought was in 2003 or so, and was the 4 valve version of this. I haven't seen another one since.

It was a solid tuba, no complaints at all. Only "issues" were handling the usual 4 valve CC low range. It was a nice tuba.

If I had the $, I'd be considering this one big-time. Adding on shipping and a gig bag gets expensive though.

Great price for a German-made 5v CC.

When those first appeared in the early 1990's (and the west German plant had not yet been - defacto - shuttered), I surmised (correctly/incorrectly...??) that those were model 32 bodies with B&S valvesets pasted onto them...

...and that the B-flat version (similarly) used the (no longer in production, correct...??) model 20 body.

Yes. I don't think it's the kind with the swappable slide to make it a flat whole step.

I had a VMI (Musica) CC with a 5th valve slide that looked like that (doubled back), but it was swappable, so there was also a slide that made it a flat whole step. I'm really liking the long slide on a 188, though, since I don't have any other 5 valve Cs to confuse it with. It works well for low C# and F#, and is long enough for reasonable C# and D next to pedal C (which I never actually have to play, but, still...).

looks really cool, but the 5th slide blocking easy access to the 1st slide is a bit unfortunate.
Methinks the flat whole step single crook slide would make a perfect little slot to slip your wrist through.

I had the 4 valve version... First slide is no joyride with the 3rd and 4th slides up there too. Give me a tight wrapped Mira 188 any day for that!

The pt6 I had (plus a pt3) had the swappable 5th slide conversion.. both of those had shorter outer slides coming out of the 5th valve. This VMI... They seem to go pretty far before the slide even starts.

Were you reaching through the body or over the top bow?

Over. Through only seems to work for me on a very few large piston tubas, and even then I hate it.

Over the top is the laziest and easiest thing (and virtually unnecessary) on the 188.
