Sad to say Floyd Cooley passed away last night...RIP...

:bow2: Who heard his concert at the 1978 T.UB.A. Conrence in LA CA???
It was the first time I ever heard F tuba performing in person. The concert was a real eye-opener for me (ear opener too). The auditorium was big, the stage was big and Floyd's sound filled the place, super expressive performance with an astounding total pallet. :bugeyes: The eye opener? Front center stage Floyd performed the entire concert standing with no music.

I did get to talk with him again 2016? Bloomington and quickly tell him the story above, with a pleasant smile and a nodding head I could see him reflecting on that concert.

Perfect thanks Joe. I remember the conference concert, and my mild irritation at the program being transcription heavy.

I last talked with him on the phone in 1995, 27 years ago when he was living about three blocks away from my home in Berkeley CA. Great player. Long time principal tuba in San Francisco Symphony. Wonderful man, very friendly and supportive.

I studied with Floyd for about 4 years while I was in the Air Force Band stationed about 45 minutes from his home. What a great teacher and person.

Your band was at Travis Air Force Base? You were very fortunate to be stationed so near Floyd Cooley's home----less than an hour's drive. He was a good teacher. Did you know one of his premier students, Peter Wahrhaftig?

Quite the influence and instrumental in getting Walter Nirschl involved in copying the York with improved accuracy.
