MW 182, 3/4, 5 rotary valve, F tuba for sale

It’s in beautiful shape, has a bag, and plays nicely. It's in mechanically perfect condition. There’s a small ding in the bell and a few minor scratches. The low c and b are not problems. Intonation is stellar; I hardly ever use my tuning trigger. I've used it on a few gigs, and my colleagues remark on how much sound I can get from such a small tuba. I'm selling it because I want to swap my two-f-tuba solution for one piston-f tuba.

Price is $6.5k. I'd prefer not to ship but will at the owner's expense and risk. Tuba is located in Huntsville, AL.

Would consider a trade for a Yamaha YFB 821, Miraphone Petruska, MW3450, Eastman 832S, Miraphone 186 or a Rudy 3/4 CC

Doug, your photo link is broken. It looks pretty truncated.

Best of luck selling this tuba. I have the bugle of one that I intend to build into… something… someday… heh, heh…

I like what I get out of mine, which is like a Yamaha 621 F with actual color and warmth in the tone. It is a very focused, and very sweet-sounding horn.

Mmmm, I'd love to have a tuba like this. I just can't justify the cost. Maybe I could take care of it for you while you wait for it to sell :teeth: Or I could trade you a trombone or two and a Chinese 3/4 BBb? :huh:

Good luck with the sale. I have a very special one....raw brass, left-hand 5th and I'm the second owner (original owner used it on a solo recording years ago). Carries surprisingly well in an orchestra. Very sweet, warm sound indeed. There's another guy here in the Chicago burbs with one who uses it all the time with brass quintet/polka gigs. Very versatile instruments.

I've seen Alan Baer play one with the NYPO Brass Quintet. Sounded great (obviously)!

I have a five-month-old, and when I look at him sometimes from a distance while he is on his play mat I forget how large his head is compared to the rest of his body.

Anyway, that's what I thought of when I saw the valve paddles on that tuba.

Ridiculous, but very true. :laugh:

Also ridiculous, I found this photo online to compare the 182 to a Thor. The fact that the bell of the 182 only reaches up to the top bow of the Thor...! Like parent/child tubas!

Coming up, the Miraphone "Babushka" series, where the F tuba nests neatly inside the C tuba's bell.

Bloke refused to sell me his a few years back. He thought I’d regret it due to intonation. If the main slide is longish and vertical, and I like the other playing characteristics of a tuba, I now know how to solve it for around 100$. I really liked it.

MW 182 was my first tuba, and it definitely "sounds like" a tuba despite its size. If I didn't have my Eb I'd have been interested. But then again, I have someone who wants my Eb --- um, nah.

Haha, nope. My Eb is way easier to play down low than that 182. It's a really fine up-high solo tuba and I had great fun with it playing low horn parts (same fingering, for you read-by-fingering folks.)

I haven't had any issues with the low register, but I've been playing on German rotary f tubas exclusively since grad school.
