Reverb: Gronitz Eb at The Mighty Quinn

Post by aarongsmith »

This a cool looking Eb. I've liked most of the Gronitz horns I've played, but I've never checked one of these out.

That item has sold.

Reverb for some reason doesn't delete old listings frequently.

Whoops, you'd think I would remember that with as much as we do at work on there.

Reviewing old listings are a good way to set your asking price.

I've played the Gronitz Eb. Not dissimilar to the Wessex 'Tubby'. https://us.wessex-tubas.com/products/eb-tuba-te665

For clarity, was the Gronitz an Eb, or an EEb?

It's a bass tuba, if that's what you mean. Not a monster, at that.

My band mate bought that exact tuba from Quinn. It’s a nice playing Eb. You can see and hear it (my review plus the owner playing it) here:

A letter got left out of the code. And I guess we can’t use the media tab in the classified section. I get an error message when I try.

I know this is several months old but thank you for the review! Gronitz and Hirsbrunner Eb tubas are so rare that's it's hard to find info or pictures of them too. But, is that tuba a similar size to the Wessex Tubby in terms of size not necessarily in height? I am assuming it's larger than the rotary Gronitz Eb that Horn Guys and the used one that Baltimore Brass had? Or is it just more compact?

The Gronitz is similar in height to the Tubby, but the Gronitz is not as large ——> If the Tubby is a 6/4 Eb, the Gronitz is a compact 4/4 Eb. Unfortunately, I don’t know how it compares to the rotary Gronitz.

Hope that helps!

It does help a lot! The particular rotary gronitz looks smaller in the photos compared to the piston one that you reviewed. Thank you.

Does Gronitz still make tubas? The web site appears to be up.

I sent an email to Horn Guys asking how much the PE56 Eb would approximately cost. I was told it would cost as much as the F tubas. He said Andreas is a busy person though. Plus, I don't know if in the future I could afford or justify another big as in cost Tuba purchase :(

Horn Guys does have 2 new Gronitz F tubas and 1 new 6/4 CC tuba though. Not sure how old they are.

Gronitz PF125 Piston F Tuba with a custom silver finish
https://hornguys.com/collections/f-tuba ... n-f-tuba-1

And from the other forum a picture of a 6 rotary valves FZ-127 F tuba and a 4 rotary valves plus a 5th dependent added to it in Eb. Also note, the website isn't super updated and doesn't have actual pictures of each model it lists. So there could be more like the 2 mentioned that are not on the site.

Andreas Seems to be able to build or modifying anything into anything, just at a price.

I played a piston Hirsbrunner Eb while at the Army SOM, it was pretty rough. I felt like I was playing trombone with all the slide moving I had to do, low C and C in the staff were like 3 inches off.
Initially I was happy they had an Eb, after a while I started to envy the Bb 1291's the other guys were playing. 🤣 Mike Finn was my instructor, he took a picture of our brass quintet playing for a ceremony, everyone else was in class B's and I was in ACUs because I didn't have any dress uniforms. I'd been fitted early in basic because of my height and never got them, when I got them a week before AIT graduation they were way too short. Iirc I also had my ankles crossed because the chairs were too damn short for me... 😅

I feel the same way with a universities Meinl Weston 20 BBb 🤣. The Hirsbrunner that you posted, is it similar to the one that was for sale on AliExpress or the photos from yorkmaster.org photo? Sadly, there seems to be no pictures of the top action version outside of the one from Hirsbrunner's own website. Although, to me, the photo that Hirsbrunner has for the front action piston version seems like the bends for the 4th valve are less abrupt than the picture below.

Ya know, I THINK I sold that tuba to a man that lived on Orcas Island, outside Seattle. IF that is THAT tuba, I can vouch for it.
