WTT - Firstborn Child for Original Willson/Kurath Ginormous Thumb Ring
HEY! YOU!
YEAH, YOU, YOU WILLSON-TUBA-OWNING THUMB RING HATER!
So you hate thumb rings. So you removed it from your tuba and it lives in the bottom of your junk drawer in your kitchen.
I need it.
Sell it to me.
TODAY!
SELL IT TO ME TODAY!
I MUST HAVE IT!
SELL IT TO ME!
No, I have no child to trade. But I *do* have parts to trade. Or money to give. Or parts of money to trade or give.
Reply with offers for original Willson- or Kurath-made massive, ridiculous, teething-ring-like hunks of manly nickel silver, only, please…

Re: WTT My Firstborn Child for Your Original Willson/Kurath Ginormous Thumb Ring
I don't have one of those, obviously, but I should take a picture of my tuba with its ring on it and my hand that does even reach the ring, which is why the ring is in the mouthpiece box. You gonna use that thing as a weapon, or what?

I genuinely like it. I generally dislike thumb rings because (from the factory) they generally are in a location that hurts my hand. And they are usually uncomfortable in some way. I like this one so much that I want to install one just like it on my Holton 345.

I remember why I can't make these. To keep the tube round (and not flattened on the inside face of the annulus) I need a special mandrel that I cannot afford to have made for me. Maybe the Harbor Freight tube bender has a half-round mandrel of the correct size? Nah, it is mostly for exhaust systems for cars.
I may try to make one of these, anyway, though.

A friend of mine just got a Curry trumpet mouthpiece with a gold rim and The Ring's script hand-engraved around it. Very cool stuff…YorkNumber3.0 wrote: ↑Sat May 13, 2023 5:31 am Some may not get this, but sometimes you want what you want. I don’t have one to offer up, but I think they’re the ring to which all are other are compared. Comfortable in every way.

If you've got a band saw, I've got a 24AW that may have finally found its purpose in life...
Seriously, that thumb ring looks to be the size of a mouthpiece visualizer. Maybe you can sacrifice a beater rim and fab a rather unique thumb ring.

I can make you a mandrel if you have a little time to wait. Might be a tad large for your Unimat.

Re: WTT - Firstborn Child for Original Willson/Kurath Ginormous Thumb Ring
It needs to match what I have *exactly*, so I am looking for an actual Willson/Kurath ring, folks. Thanks for all the suggestions, though.
NOTE: I think I may have this sorted, thanks to ein Freund in Deutschland...
