The first Texas Brass Fest!

This is super short notice, but the Texas Brass Fest is 27 May, 2023, at the Round Top Festival Institute (about halfway between Austin and Houston). Starts at 1pm, with a mass band after the four individual bands play.

It's not just tubas, but it will feature a much higher tuba per person ratio than most other wind bands. The only regular poster here that I think will be there (besides me) is @Doc, but that probably just means I don't know enough people.

Is it commonplace for brass bands to have such creative names?

I’m new to the genre, so can’t say for sure, but they may put the creative energy into finding venues when nobody in Texas knows what a brass band is.

Kentucky has at least kept it interesting with the Lexington Brass Band (LBB) and the Brass Band of Louisville (BBL).

I just learned that the Austin group used to be called the Austin Wonder Brass, but nobody knew what it meant.

Confusingly, I used to play in the Advocate
Brass Band, which started as an homage/recreation of an American turn of the century "brass band," featuring a full woodwind section. Glad they've moved away from the red wool uniforms.

This is from the mass brass band rehearsal that happened earlier in the morning and shot from the Eb tuba side of the back row. There were 18 tubas total with the BBb side having CC and BBb tubas and Eb side with F and Eb tubas. On the other side of Mike Lynch is @Doc playing on a Boosey & Hawkes Imperial Eb. I am on Mike’s left playing on an Imperial as well.

Thanks for posting that, Mike! It's such a peculiar march, but I like it.

Mike Lynch was playing a Petruschka, and I (on the other side of other Mike from Mike Lynch) had a Miraphone 181 that's the right age to look just like a PT10.

I can't speak for everyone, of course, but I had a great time and look forward to doing it again next year.

Here's the same march from the front (and at the end of the day). To balance 18 tubas there were only three soprano cornets because one guy plays in both the Austin and San Antonio bands.
