B&S Symphonic prototype, 6 valves from Germany - 1,5k € – sold

Post by tubajoe »

Hey guys,

I am selling a 6-valve F tuba that I originally bought for my students. However, they don't get along with the instrument very well. I can't say what the problem is. Maybe the narrow bore?

The instrument
- works very well
- the valves do not rattle/are not audible
- the slides all run smoothly
- has no dents
- the valves "popping"
- has 17 mm bore
- 38 cm bell diameter

Here you can see a lot of pictures:
https://nextcloud.joseph-grauel.de/s/pWfFZXyDRpfaA77

The 5th valve is an extended semitone, the 6th one an extended whole tone. I can supply further pictures and data with pleasure.

The seller told me that he had played the instrument as a teenager and that it is a prototype of the B&S Symphony series. But it is in excellent condition. There is only on the 3rd valve very light zinc pitting (see pictures).

I sell the instrument including the bag (GEWA) for 1500 €. Shipping is possible if you pay the taxes and shipping costs (see here https://www.dhl.de/de/privatkunden/pake ... erika.html). Otherwise, it can be played and picked up in Freiburg or Lahr (Black Forest).

For the sale, a contract will be signed mutually. In case of shipping, payment is only possible by bank transfer (after signing the contract in advance).

PS: I am not a dealer and sell the tuba for the price I bought it for. I am happy to send proof of purchase in a private message.

That looks like fun. How does it play?

If it weren't so far away, I'd be eager to give it a try.

Last 4th of July, I bought an old F tuba from someone in Germany and had it shipped to me in the US.

This year... Sorry, can't do it. Among other things, bought a car today...

Good luck with the sale, it shouldn't last long!

Wow, a hole year? That's definitely too long…

I googled it and there are information about 8 weeks…

The play feeling is like to convince an old lady. After a while she is doing what you want, but you need some time to get in touch together. Or in other words: there is a bit of resistance. You need more air than on new tubas, maybe because of the tight bow between 6th and 1st valve.

But the tuba has a nice sound, completely different to other tubas.

If the rotors aren't leaky and the overtone series are fairly close to true, intuitive players can figure out what an instrument needs (input-wise) in order to make it do what it should do.

A bonus is when the linkage doesn't rattle.
