Tuba Tuesday: Rotary Valve C.G. Conn BBb Tuba

Post by bisontuba »

Happy Tuba Tuesday!

In today’s edition, from the Museum, we feature an American maker -C.G. Conn -who used piston valves on 99.9% of their brass instruments. We're thrilled to showcase this unique C.G. Conn rotary valve BBb tuba from 1923 as part of the featured collection. It is suspected this tuba may have been a special order for the famous tuba artist August Hellenberg.

It deserves far better than I. However I do need to take it to my technician and have the valve springs redone and a few solder joints and braces moved. The sound is glorious. It really seems to respond to a small mouthpiece and if you relax into the low register, it really rips. I haven't been able to get the sound to break up. It's fun!
