The Yamaha detachable collar on the fifth valve is a pretty good clue also

Were I expected to play something like that day in / day out / week in / week out, the extra 20,000 bucks would be worth it to me.

Thankfully, there's no American C requirement as there is a B-flat requirement in Central Europe.

There are "needs" and "wants". Players/purchasers need to know which category they fit into.

Keep in mind the toolbox of a good auto mechanic might cost more than that. Where I live, there are people into sport fishing. $30K might buy the two motors on their boat. Then there is everything else.

After playing that Nirschl which was as easy to play as my Star, I'm no longer willing to struggle with a CC. That one is in my price range and I don't care what it looks like. But play testing from here is impossible, and I don't know how to get someone else to decide if it would meet my standards.
(Ha, my standards being, if you're not that good a player you need a REALLY GOOD Instrument!!!)

I think I'm a fairly good player - maybe not quite where I was 30 years ago, but I don't have 3 to 5 hours a day to remind myself about all the goofy stuff I would need to do to play a difficult instrument in tune and smoothly, so I'm not interested in instruments that are quirky and require me constantly myself of their quirks. Other people are welcome to buy those.

I'm also not interested in instruments that remind me of their valves and slides. I don't want to be noticing those things.

I can get two of a lot of things for the price of one of another thing. That's not a motivation for me to buy two of something else.

There are quite a few people (based on the chat that I read) who are way more willing to work really hard to make tubas play in tune compared to me.

Of all the different CSO 6/4 C knockoffs, the Yamaha one is far and above the easiest one to play in tune.

I played a couple of new ones one time, talked to the Yamaha representative about them, he said they were they glad to sell them, they are delighted to sell them, if they didn't want to sell them, they wouldn't be displaying them.

I think the main thing is that not very many show that much money, rather than not everyone is worthy.

I played Floyd Cooley's used Nirschl very shortly afterward - which was for sale; it was nearly as good but not. I have not played other Nirschls that good.

The one I haven't played is ZO, so - as far as I know - it could be better than the other seven.

Hb/Adams, Nirschl, Yamaha, BMB/subsequent badges, Wessex, Eastman, Holton...
...Of the few factory Holton C instruments, I suspect I've played one of the best... ' too mellow. (The Holton B-flat resonance is generally more balanced.)

It's a long time ago. On that particular day I had 2/3 of the funds in my pocket in cash and ample balance in the bank, but it was the first time I'd ever played a Miraphone 98 as well... so I had to do some serious thinking.

Enough people have figured out that I'm not a particular fan of Yamaha to realize that I'm not shooting the breeze when I state that the YCB-826S 6/4 C is clearly the best of all of the York 6/4 knockoffs. If something's the best, it's the best... the playing position is bizarre (as with all of those), but it's the best.

The only other tubas of theirs that I might mess with would be the 621 F tuba - as an emergency F tuba to play one gig out of town where someone had one to loan me...

...as well as the discontinued model 631 compensating E-flat which is/was a very nice instrument. The 321 E-flat blows well, but - as I've said before - I don't see much use for four non-compensating valves on a tuba (as there's so little advantage - compared to three valves, that the 4th valve might as well be left off, and let the advantage be less weight to carry around) and particularly on a bass tuba, the lowest sort of usable pitch being a quite sharp a natural with 2-4 and then (hit-and-miss) the 2-3-4 G-natural and then - finally - the fundamental E-flat.
