Mirafone 186 for Sale Soon

Post by tylerferris1213 »

Hello everyone! I just picked up a Mirafone 186 that's in excellent condition for its age. The rotor arms a little loud, but I'm planning on addressing that before the buyer gets it. I'll also get all the slides moving again. This is the model that has interchangeable bells, and I have both! The recording bell has the original hard case and is IMMACULATE. No lacquer wear whatsoever. This is probably because a previous owner had the upright bell soldered into the collar.

I thought I'd see what interest there is before I dig into the project. I can make the upright bell removable again and re-attach the bell screw flanges, but if someone is only interested in the horn with an upright bell, I can leave that part as is and sell the recording bell separately. What do you all think? The horn has the original Miraphone hard case for the body and upright bell along with a separate hard case just for the recording bell.

Sounds cool!

That was how my old Marzan was -- detachable bells, but the upright bell was soldered on and the recording bell was never used and was in 100% condition. I've never used a recording bell tuba outside of my basement, and probably never will. But, I bet it's quite pretty with a (basically!) brand new bell.

IMHO it should be restored to original condition.

Side note -- if the upright bell needs any work whatsoever, then unsolder it and restore it back to its original detachable-ness.

When I bought my Marzan, the bell was crumpled (allegedly, it was stepped on) and needed to be repaired. I took it to BrassLab (Chuck McAlexander), and he did an excellent job of straightening it all out. When I picked up the tuba, he said that it was kind of a difficult job due to the size and weight of the tuba -- I think it was in the 25+ pound club.

I asked him "do you think sometime you could unsolder the upright bell and restore it to being detachable?"

He was NOT happy to hear that, and sternly (but not impolitely) asked me if I realized just how much easier his work would have been if detachable upright bell had been OFF of the tuba before repairing it. How embarrassing. Sorry, Chuck. :red:

I did, later, have the bell removed, but I had the work done by someone else (only because they were closer and could get to it quickly). Shipping a large detachable bell tuba was outrageously easier than shipping a large fixed-bell tuba.
