I call b.s. on the decibel claim that someone made at the "old" place...I suspect that they had a mic stuck down in the bell, or some such.Indoors, bagpipes can reach decibel levels up to 116, which is as loud as a chainsaw. Snare drums can hit up to 122 decibels. The noise level is louder than the sound produced by a jet engine at take off.
Why do they drink so much scotch?

Maybe, they tested off one of those c. 70-year-old principal players who refuses to retire?

To dull the noise generated behind them!
If it’s tourist season, why can’t we shoot them?

Re: Why do they drink so much scotch?
Note that the dB scale was A-weighted. “A” weighting is intended to assess danger, which is greater at the higher frequencies, so it filters out lower frequencies. So the tuba and trombone are actually putting out more sound pressure level that is shown on the chart.
A snare drum hit at close range can easily be in the 120’s, though only for an instant. Most SPL meters are damped to some extent. And the danger depends in part on duration.
But bagpipes are dangerous at any SPL. And beyond that, their frequency output is in the most sensitive part of the “A” scale.

This thread is about "Instruments of Mass Destruction", apparently.
