Happy Tuba Tuesday!
In today’s edition, from the Museum, we feature one of the oldest tubas in the collection! This Schmidt, F tuba, was made around 1845. It has five "Berliner Pumpen" or Berliner style pistons and is very similar to the tuba described in the 1835 patent for the first Tuba. Check out our tuba and the patent picture to see how similar they are!

Re: Tuba Tuesday: Schmidt 5v c. 1845 F Tuba
Just to add a note here. The engraving and design date the tuba to after 1872 when VIlhelm Schmidt took over the company from his father Peter Schmidt who started his own independent company in 1855. Although it looks similar to a Moritz Baßtuba, when you put them side by side, they are considerably different and in addition you could order a Schmidt with either Berliner valves, rotary valves or even perinet valves up until the early 1900s.
