Hi-
As long as you pay the registration fee for the event, I do not believe you have to be a member of ITEA to attend ..

In every year I’ve done these, as a student and now as a presenter/performer, since 2007, you have to be a member AND pay the registration. This includes invited presenter/performers, members of student ensembles, and competitors.

ITEA has made it clear that these events are the main way they generate new memberships, and with the new executive committee, they finally are trying to find ways to keep these new members engaged so they renew.

But if you are not a member, does it really encourage new memberships by excluding non members from seeing what goes on at these events? Hmmm...

Yup. I was a member when I was in college. We were required to maintain membership in a related professional organization. I gained nothing by being a member, just an economic expense for a person already buried in debt.

While I would really like to go to a conference, it's not worth enough for me to renew my membership.

I was going to ask my sons horn teacher to go with me also. I had talked to her about going to an educator conference a couple months ago. Same issue. She also said that many teachers dont go because its redicuolous expensive.

Alienated.

I had a call with the executive director last month. He said this would not happen again (he had just taken over the position a week or so earlier).

I just saw the Fairfax one, which is equal distance to me as the Murfreesboro, TN one. The one in Murfreesboro was the first announced.

Kind of weird that the "northeast" one is in Fairfax, VA, south of the Mason-Dixon line. I live in southern New England and that is a 7-8 hour drive for me.

Used a free website to put this together. The cities in Tennessee are a bit goofy but it still illustrates a point that given six conference locations to cover the USA, these are poorly optimized.

They're going to be held where some tuba guy is looking to put "hosting" in their tenure notebook (or just LIKES to do it)...so "how spread out" can't really be cross-referenced with "who needs a feather in their cap?" or "Who LIKES to or is WILLING to do it?".

Regarding the Tennessee ones (Memphis/Murfreesboro) , which manufacturers (that make instruments in Europe) are going to be represented at those?

cost?

Nailed it.

Also, how about a reasonably priced one day pass option for non members. I'm sure there's lots of amature players and HS band teachers that would go for a look.

There's not many shops in the US that offer an ***In house*** complete line of mp's and large variety of horns to try. Not to mention other related stuff. If there's lots of vendors in attendance. But you all know that already.

I feel like I'm beating a dead horse.

Anyway. I feel a little bad about my earlier response. I got a little upset because I was really interested in going. The Ohio location is within a reasonable distance.
