Eventually I realised that there ain’t no such things as paid holidays. Your wages just get held back from when you’re actually in work and you’re allowed to not come in for a few days … nothing is for nothing.

When you’re self employed any day can be a holiday, but holidays tend to be taken when there’s either no paid work to be done or when you’ve a job that needs doing and someone else’s rate for doing it is more than your own.

When self employed did I take holidays? Yes I did, some holiday time is an investment in your personal health - never take good health for granted - and in the social health of your family … divorce is real messy and expensive. Would I drive into work during foul weather? Probably but accidents cost money to put right and you could get injured (which could put you off work sick for a while) - a balance of risks and expenses.

One great thing about working in a Park is that my quarters are a 2 minute walk from the office.

Even on a paid day off a lot of us are out there. Responded available for an EMS call for a snowmobile accident this morning and told to stand by as 4 LE and 2 medics were available to run it. Five minutes later got a separate Fire page to the hotel that I ran (accidental activation by contractors).
